Title: ISO: Daryan ???
Post by: justink on September 02, 2005, 12:54:17 PM
i bought some canare right angle xlr 20 footers from someone on here a couple years ago...  i believe it was Daryan.

anyhow...  i finally got around to trying them out last night (wanted to use them for DMB on 09-05-05) and there is a large amount of crackeling in them.  i thought the soldering may be bad because it happens whenever i just touch a cable....  so i opened up one of the connectors and sure nuff...  some of the solder points are completely out of the connector.

i've never even used these before so it's kind of disapointing...  anyone know how to get ahold of him or does anyone know how to fix this?  i've never soldered anything in my life.   :o

that happened?  when?  how bad a fire was it?

would these be fine if i can get them soldered correctly?  i don't want to fry any mics or obviously burn down a venue!   ???

as far as fixing them, you might want to try Leegeddy...  he's TS's favorite cableman.   His work is exquisite.

I'd also TRY to get some $$$ back from -2000.... good luck with that though.

it didn't actually cause a fire, but apparently just a bunch of sparks started shooting out of a piece of gear, which was quickly pulled apart.  it happened in the section at UNO for panic in 2003, i believe.  i wouldn't use the cables unless you know how to use a multimeter to test the cables to make sure they are soldered correctly and passing current to the proper pins.  that's just me, though.  to daryan's credit, i believe he will give you your money back.

might have a tough time getting cash back though since you apparently bought them a few years ago and just now got around to trying them out....

regardless, I can re-solder for you if you like.

i just got around to trying them out because i've slowly been trying to piece together a rig...  and i bought these cables back then because it sounded like a good deal...

Sixto:  PM sent!  :)

i just pm'd and emailed daryan, hopefully i'll hear back soon.  i'm not angry or anything, just disapointed.  and was worried that i might have just thrown that money away.   :'(

anyhow... if it's as simple as just re-soldering that one connection, then i think i can manage it.  is that all it will take?  assuming all the other wires are soldered to the correct connections though...  (i believe they are, they worked fine as long is i didn't attempt to move the one cable and jar that connection...)

you may have stray wires if the strands werent tinned or soldered together correctly, I would consider sending them to someone who can help clean the insides up if needed

an old joke.  do some searching and you'll figure it out.

if you'd like me to look at the cables, let me know.  it shouldn't be too hard to fix.  if you have a continuity tester, you'll be fine fixing them yourself.

to his credit though he seems to be behaving himself better now

i bought some purple canare cables with right angle neutric connectors from daryan. i went through 2 shows that are now unlistenable because there was noise on of the channels and/or interemittant cut-outs in each show. turns out there was a short on the soldering of the cables to the connectors. i opened up the connector and couldnt believe what i saw.  it was a mess in there. it looked like a blind person had soldered the connections. i had to resolder the cables myself and added heat shrink wrap, and now they work fine.

THAT'S EXACTLY the problem i'm having!   noise and cut-outs!  what you wrote is almost as if you were looking at and describing my cables!   :-[

thanks for the info.

all you guys rock!
Heath is gonna help me out w/ these cables and Sixto is sending me some xlr's to use!  i appreciate everything.

I remember seeing that. Funny shit. Cable was SMOKIN' and plastic was melting. ;D Seemed like it was pre-03 though?

I'll do whatever you would like me to do.  I honestly have not the time at the moment to deal with resoldering them.  I will assume you got them from me and will get you taken care of.  Sorry about that happening, a real bummer for sure.  I wil PM you when I get my wits about me after the drive I just had...9 hours and change.

Daryan did make me whole on the ordeal as he refunded all money I paid to him. There was no damage to the actual piece of gear

take em to a quality audio shop, or maybe a RadShack employee as a side job?

I'd like to see the look on a Radio Shack employee's face when you ask him to solder something for you.  I don't know about down in Cali, but here in Orygun the Radio Shack employees know Jack and Shit...........and Jack just left town.  They will sure try to sell you a cell phone or Direct TV however. :P
