I am buying Nick's VR-4s, and his amps, have a denon 2900...but I need a reciever.
I dont want to break the bank, but will spend as much as I have to to get a decent unit that will last me for a few years.
any and all suggestions welcome. what are you folks using?

If you already have the power amp(s), what features do you need / want in the receiver? Preamp, tuner, switchbox for multiple playback devices, multi-channel support, surround sound processor, etc.?

tuner, switchbox for multiple playback devices, multi-channel support though the first two are most important

let me suggest the receiver i use, it has come down in price significantly since i bought it but im sure its not all that cheap anymore- you are gonna have to do some research. it is only missing 2 things i wish it had- greater video switching capabilities and hdmi ins

oops, just noticed you want multi channel, they do have a surround model

I think harman kardon, denon, and yamaha have nice receiver lines too.

sorry, after a reread, what i suggested doesn't have a tuner, but id wait on a tuner until the hd radio home boxes are out in full force- id rather have that quality of radio than a built in receiver.
-
yeah, tuner is secondary..i dont listen to radio.
especially here in Germany...ridden by gay house music, trance, hop hip, and pat boone. :-X

don't forget the hoff :)
knowing what you listen to and knowing the types of gear you like i really think you need to audition some of the mac gear- its got that vintage sound i think you will like, but with very modern electronics. my combo with my b&w's makes my classical music sing. turandot has never sounded so good.

Ill look into Macintosh, thanks Jonny. I love how early classical recordings sound.

just wondering, what B&Ws do you have?

803's, 805s and an htm-1

Wow. Very nice. I have a pair of 303s and a LCR3. I still need rear surrounds... was thinking of another pair of 303s. The salesman was suggesting I get 601s, use those as my fronts, and move the 303s to the back. We'll see what happens...

Was also wondering if you can run the same pairs for both front and rear, (such as 303's) for both! these are top notch monitors, so if the surround unit(receiver) is decoding what it should be per channel, does two of the same front and rear really matter?

It's possible to do that... it's an option I'm considering.
-
you certainly can, but just remember that your rears will need less than your fronts- they take significantly less than the fronts to drive the sound

The receiver should take care of that, shouldn't it?

I really like my buddy's Outlaw. They make a couple nice preamp only versions that would be appropriate since you already have amps (vs. the reciever models linked to earlier in the thread) all with the features you're looking for. Appeals to me as a sweet price/performance value for a quality unit. Worth looking at. $600-$1K range I believe.
I'll be upgrading my playback in a year or so once I get my house back together, so I'm curious as to what you decide on.

The Outlaw gear gets great reviews - from even the highend audio rags like The Absolute Sound.
and the best thing is, they sell direct to public, so they cut out the middleman,
and you get an in=home trial to try them out.
You don't like it, just send them back.
