Title: No levels on h120
Post by: jonohull on September 05, 2007, 05:52:38 PM
I finally got all the pieces to my rig here, and I went to test it, but something's wrong. My set-up is JM27>UA-5>h120. I did the digimod on the UA-5 myself. I can see the red light coming out of the optical cable. Also, the peak light is lighting up, so I know the mics are fine. I just don't see any levels on the iRiver screen (it's Rockboxed). What could the problem be?

did you switch to optical-input in the iriver“s recording-settings?

Yes, I did that.

Does recording analog-in work?

Yeah, line in works with my stealth mics I have. The headphone monitor jack works on the UA-5.

Do those mics require phantom power and if so, has the phantom power button on the UA-5 been activated/depressed so that it is lit?

Yeah, the mics work, and I can hear them through the monitor-out. The phantom power is turned on.

Triple check that you have source set to digital on the iRiver.  What are your upper & lower thresholds set at for the range of the levels being displayed?  Set them to something narrow, like -12 & 0 and see if the levels show up.  If you have the red light at the end of the cable before you connect it to the recorder and the clip light is blinking occassionally on the UA-5 (and you can hear something through the monitor jack), I don't see why you wouldn't be getting levels on the iRiver.

May be a lame question but you are plugging into the line IN on the iriver, not the line OUT, right?

I doubled checked the input selection, and made sure I used the "In" jack. I set the thresholds narrower, and still nothing. Could it be something with Rockbox? I'll try a new build and see what happens.

Edit:
Ok, nothing is fixed, and now my backlight just flickers a lot. I switched to line-in and I can get a signal from the back outputs. Maybe it's something with the optical jack on the iRiver?

There are no know issues related optical recording with Rockbox.
Maybe reset your settings?

A flickering backlight doesn't sound very good though, maybe the unit has hardware issues?
As I have no h1x0, I can't help you more, maybe somebody at Rockbox (irc, forum) can help?

Yeah, I guess I'll take it over to misticriver. The backlight was working fine before I upgraded Rockbox.

I now notice that wen I tried recording something, the file size didn't go up. I jiggled the cable coming out of the UA-5, and the file size started growing, but still no levels. Maybe this is the area of the problem?

Bad optical cable.  You will see light out of the end of the cable, but it won't pass signal...

I had one.  Everything was working right, but no levels.  Switched out cables, and it all worked just fine...

Hmm, I got one that was recommended by someone on this board. I guess I just got a dud. What would anyone suggest?
