Doubtful.  Audacity's default output format is 16-bit.  Probably truncated from 24- to 16-bit.  If you're on Windows, right-click and select Properties, and see what it says in the Summary tab.

I use Audacity to download from the R1 and then save it as a wav file.

the file should already be a wav file on the R1.  Instead of using audacity to download the file from the r1, try just copying the file from the r1 to your computer.  When you hook up the R1 it should act as a drive under my computer, from there just copy the file over and then try opening it Sound Forge.

I use 24bit files in Sound Forge all the time, so I don't think thats your problem.

Can you record a 16bit file on the R1 or does it only do 24bit?  If you're just making ringtones, it seems like 24bit would be overkill.

you can record mp3, 16 bit and 24 bit on the R1.  i just remove the flash card for the R1 and transfer the files via a standalone flash card reader that came with a digital camera.  it should just be a drag and drop routine for transfering files, there's no reason to complicate it.

I did all that you suggested. I followed the directions exactly as described in the R1 manual.

I'll remove the flashcard and try using it in a CF reader. I agree that 24 bit is a little overkill for ringtones but I always strive for the best quality.

I *think* if the file is still 24bit, but the header says 16bit, so the computer thinks its 16bit, you shouldn't be able to burn it to a cd.   I'd try that to see if it genuinely still is 24bit or not.

I found the problem and now I feel stupid!

Although I have Sony Sound Forge, I only have the Audio Studio version. I checked Sony's website and it only handles 16bit whereas Sound Forge 8 handles everything.
