problem while editing a recording
« on: April 29, 2007, 07:24:22 AM »
hi

don´t know in which sub-board i should post this..

have a question.

i was yesterday recording "the ghost rockets" in a little youth centre (i think there´ve only been around 4-5m between the stage and the wall of the other side ^^
my setup was: MBHOs @DIN (20cm/90°) on a micstand at 2,20m -> mic2496 (gainlevel at minimum) -> microtrack (spdif-in @2496)
as a result of the small distance between the boxes and my microphones the record has this annoying clipping at many points (i had no possibility to reduce the input level (i need some of those attenuatorpads for the mbhos - so if someone has some which he dont need... pm me..)

heres a picture of the essence problem:

whats the reason of these "clicks" and what is this called?
they appear on silent parts too and sound like this:
http://rapidshare.com/files/28526357/Cue_1.flac.html

it disappeared after using the click/pop eliminiator filter of Cool Edit Pro 2.1 (using the preset "hiss + lots of klicks")
Mics: MBHO MBP603A / KA200N, Soundprofessionals CMC8-C
Preamps: Sony XLR-1, CoreSound Mic2496, SPSB8
Recorder: Sony PCM-D50, Microtrack 2496, Sony MZ-RH1

Camcorder: Panasonic HDC-HS700

It doesn't sound like pre-amp distortion, it sounds more like a digital problem where the signal, like if it wasn't being properly recorded to the media or the cable you are using for SPDIF might be bad.  Does this clicking increase/decrease in relation to the levels?

Try doing some test recording not at a show, just outside or something, and see if the clicking persists.

That's what it looks like to me.  Your recording isn't overloading.  You're getting digital noise due to a bad connection somewhere (quite possibly in your S/PDIF cable).

Doesnt the micro crap 24/96 have clocking issues when recording from a digital source via spdif if run above 48k?

If so this might be a clocking isssue between the mic24/96 and the micro crap.
