Topic: Mic spacing angles

Anyone out there who is a wizard on different mic spacing techniques?

What recording angle/s between your capsules would you choose in the following situations (assume you are recording rock music in a big arena and your mics are spaced about 17-25 cm apart):

A. Close to the stacks using

1a. omnis 2a. cardiods 3a. hypercardiods

B. in the middle of the arena (infront of soundboard)

1b. omnis 2b. cardiods 3b. hypers

C. far back in the arena at seats

same options as above!

Any ideas on this topic is highly appreciated. Would be interesting to hear comments both from theoretical viewpoints and what you learned from experience!  Thanks everyone!

To answer your questions:  I have stack taped with omnis, but I was extremely close to them. There might be other people who want to chime in on this one. Next if you are running FOB (front of board), you can choose to run cards or hypercards if you are at a distance. If I am running FOB outdoors and it doesn't look like I will have a bunch of chatty people around, I will run omni. Good luck.

There is no real correct answer.... Location distance away/ distance from center play big roles.

Some of the best recordings I have heard were 'just point at the stacks'. Some were measured with protractor and ruler... Nothing beats location... Some times its 1 ft either way LOL

What angles should one consider for hypers far back?  Too big angle creates a hole in the middle of the soundimage I hear.
