r-09 advice needed URGENTLY!
« on: March 08, 2008, 10:54:08 AM »
i could do with some advice on what levels to set the r-09 at. im planning to record a gig tonight which will probably be pretty loud with a capacity of around 4000. i have floor seats towards the back. part of the music will be acoustic and the other electric.

i have seen that the r-09 levels range between 1-30 and i plan to use it with my church audio pre amp and CA cards.

is it a good idea to put the recorder levels to full and then the preamp to about 11 o'clock?

i would really appreciate some advice

thanks

You do not want to run the recorder at full ever. Its pretty noisy when you do that. Run my preamp at 75% and the rest of the gain get from your edirol. You should be fine.

thanks for the advice chris

so i would be looking at having the pre at about 3 o'clock and the remainder from the r-09 right? - on a 1-30 scale what would you recommend having the r-09 at?

I cant really say what level to run the r-09 at because I dont know what acoustic levels your going to be subject to at your concert. I would say try to run the levels as close to 6 as possible with peaks going over -6 on your VU meter and you will be ok. I would get a loud stereo setup and crank the tunes as loud as you think your show will be and stand very close to your speakers with headphones on adjust the levels until you dont have distortion issues. A real concert will be much louder then any home stereo so back off about 3 db from the settings you get at home and you should be somewhere in the ball park.

Its always hard and there are no magic numbers that anyone can say will work 100% Once you record a few shows you will get the hang of it.

Run the R-09 @ level 8. Plug Chris's preamp into the line-in, and crank it up! Any more on the R-09 and you're getting an attenuated signal which will result in loss of quality. It might seem weird how high you have to go on the preamp, but don't be afraid to turn it up high and watch the meters on the R-09 screen. Mine usually peak around -15 to -10 dB.
Good luck!

EDIT: Sorry Chris, just read your post....was it 6? Maybe I'm remembering wrong...

I personally find -6 to be a good place. I did some listing tests and I found at least to my ears that the A-D converters sound like crap on the edirol if you are much below -6 and when you hit -6 it seems to have much more definition to the sound. The same can be said for any A-D converter if you dont hit the input hard enough they just dont seem to come alive.

well i ended up having the r09 at 15 and the pre at about 70-75%. i will be transferring the recording today and hopefully have it torrented sometime soon. ive listened to bits of it and it sounded good to me, perhaps not as good as it could have been...everything is there on the recording. i'll try and post some samples soon
