CF based small recorders

I think I have decided on the R9.. but given how many CF cards I have floating around - other than the MT - are there any CF based similar sized recorders.. I would prefer to run 24/48 - and will be running line in from a MP2.. so a decent A/D is a must..

I'm thinking something compareable to the MT.. not the 744t.. would love to have the MiniR82 as a backup.. but it would cost me double - as my wife gets to match my hobby dollars - dollar for dollar

If nobody comes up with a solution, the CF modded Irivers are starting to take off:

Granted, this will only give you 16/44.1, but the H1xx is small and reliable.

(You could even CF mod a JB3 or the legacy JB1 for a poor man's rig, but I guess you're past that stage).

I was just daydreaming about a single board computer solution to this problem. Something like there here http://www.embeddedarm.com/products/board-detail.php?product=TS-7800 Granted, I do a lot of daydreaming but it seems pretty workable. The power seems a little high on this particular model, probably due to all those snazzy peripherals but I just started looking at these this morning.

You could have a box that boots up and starts recording. It could probably be done on less MHz if it was totally dedicated to recording and nothing else. I was just poking around about how to do the S/PDIF to IO interface 15 minutes ago. I'm sorta lost in that department though..

I think you should not base your purchase on the type of memory card used.    I know you want to take advantage of the Compactflash cards you already own, but SD and SDHC memory is so cheap that it really doesn't add much to the cost.   A standard 4GB SDHC card costs less than $20.

If you decide on an R-09 and have some compact flash lying around unused...I could use some more cards to use with your old 702.

IMO anything with an "operating system" should be avoided in a recorder.

everything has an "operating system" these days.  All of the firmware that runs on our recorders are "operating systems".  In fact, the HD-P2 firmware is based on Windows CE, and it is rock solid.  (I only know that it is based on Windows CE because they mention it in the notes of the latest firmware update.)

That said, there are definite advantages to operating systems (firmware) that has been written specifically for a certain function on a certain piece of hardware.

I've been using the PDA setup for almost 3 years (edit - with Dell Axim x50v), it's been super nice. I just upgraded my OS to WM6 so I could take advantage of those $30 8GB SDHC cards on Amazon, picked up a new double capacity battery for $12 while I was there too.

Everything has an OS, some are nicer than others and a PPC is probably a little over the top sure but it's worked out really good. Now I'm more worried about the mini jack on the adapter card than anything. It will eventually wear out and then I'll have to buy a new card.

That's why I'm motivated on this homebrew recorder. I've been studying up on this board computer http://www.embeddedarm.com/products/board-detail.php?product=TS-7800 and I think it will really work with an S/PDIF receiver front end like the Cirrus or Ti chips. No more mini plugs to wear or goofy UI's, and I'm in charge of the form factor and content.. Now I'm searching for a good PC/104 flash addon card that supports at least up to 8GB cards. Either that or recoding the FPGA onboard to accept SD sockets - if I can get the right SDHC drivers for Debian.
