bought me some beyer MC930's
« on: March 21, 2008, 04:01:39 AM »
Just picked up some beyer MC930's for my first pair of mics.  not a bad choice i'm told.  would you recommend a Warm or Transparent mod (from Busman most likely) to pair with these mics?

ummm, neither.
why ruin a perfectly good pair of mics with a completely unneeded modification.
not to say that mr. busman's mod will ruin your mics....just saying it's totally unnessicary since the Beyers sound great as is.

as T as possible, imo.
these mics are warm and smooth and will benefit from a clean preamp.  I"m thinking a V3 would be the perfect compliment for them.

maybe i'm korfused...
are you talkin' bout modding the mics themselves, or the preamp behind the mics?

AFAIK busman doesn't mod these mics so I believe he's talking about the pre-amp.

well that certainly makes more sense. i guess i shouldn't post pre-coffee.
in either case...forget about the mod! get a preamp that needs no help (ie. Grace, EAA, 7xx, Neve).

as long as we are talking flavors or pre-amps (modded or unmodded) I'd agree wtih nick. transparent is the way to go with beyers.

That may be true, but some kind of pre-amp is necessary, so since you're recommending that the mics sound fine as is, I suppose transparent seems logical.

those are some nice pre's, unfortunately they are a bit rich for my blood at this point...

im thinking of going with an all in one, probably the fostex fr2le.  probably unmodded at first.  in the future, i will move towards either a T mod or a nice pre.

thanks again

Yep, Beyers straight into the Fostex should be great.
I'm also running the Beyers directly into an Edirol R09, providing phantom power with a self-made 18V battery box.  A PS-2 or similar would provide phantom power.  That might even be the cheapest/smallest solution:
  MC930 > PS2 > Edirol R09

welcome to the game paul.  a good friend of mine who has finally made the leap.  we are now batting around the idea of a fr2le from oade (tax returns should permit) with the tmod.  but the edirol r-09 sounds sweet.  i've listened to a few recordings from soundmann.com albeit on ghetto ass cpu speakers and the bb youve got sounds good richard.  any more info you could provide on this for the 930>bb>r-09?  a simple build?

thanks
