Topic: question about using sony ecm ms907 mic

gotten lotsa great tips here, so i'm hoping someone can give me some advice. i was called in at the last minute to tape suicide at the south street seaport last year; i had no decent mic and picked up a sony ecm ms907 on the fly (all i could afford before payday, too). very happy with it; suicide's sound guy was taping a multi-track board feed and was so impressed with what i caught that they'll be matrixed for dubbing onto a video of the show (need that phat freaking punk-rock sound for one singer and electronic keyboards, doncha know). anyway, given that the ecm ms907 has that 90 degree 120 degree range of sound capability thing going on, would it make sense to get another mic? did suicide into my macbook through soundstudio, but just treated myself to a microtrack II and want to know if two mics in it would work or be overkill. thanks in advance!

This question opens about 7 cans 'o worms.  Take some time to poke around and do some searching.  You're asking a value question which can't be answered absolutely.

Sound happens to be a logorithmic scale/game, many places to go up.

hi ben,
i wanna leave the worms all nice and canned up, so i guess this is what i want to know: would using two mics that have side stereo applications cause some sort of weird phasing shit that i've read about or create a boomier sounding recording than i want? i'm not a rocket scientist about sound by any means and am basically wondering if two such mics would be gilding the proverbial lily. and my budget is the same hundred bucks i spent on the first mic. but yeah, i'll go poke...

The 907 is single-point stereo; no need to add an additional mic if thats what you're trying to achieve.  Also, can the Microtrack-II even matrix 2 stereo mic inputs on the fly?  if not, you could use two 907s as mono sources (1 for each channel). You'll probably be better off with a mic upgrade, especially since the 907 lacks bottom end.

The MS907 is already set up in a stereo configuration so adding another wouldn't accomplish anything.  I actually did it with two 908 mics before I knew any better and it doesn't do any good, even though it causes no harm either.  You would be better off investing in a set of mics of continue with the single 907.
