New modular ADK mics?
« on: April 04, 2008, 11:30:28 PM »
I just got my Full Compass catalog, and page 3 has info on a new modular ADK microphone line. I can't find anything online, so here's the blurb:
Quote
ADK CHI
ADK Medusa Labs & ADK Custom Shop Modular Microphone System - This new ultra-high resolution modular head amp called CHI (Custom Head-amp Integrator) offers lipstick and lollipop capsules that interchange with the head-amp. All parts may be interchanged with ADK small diaphragm mics and at least five other third-party microphone company's small (22mm) diameter products.
Pricing
CHI body - MSRP $795
C, HC, O, or fig-8 caps -  MSRP $495
LD lollipop heads - MSRP $595
I haven't called FC to find out street price, but I am really intrigued by the third-party compatibility - wish I knew which other mics, specifically. The only other lower-priced SD figure-8 mic I know of is the AKG 300/CK94. Still waiting on the Peluso 3-pattern cap. Luxury options include Neumann AK20, Schoeps MK8, and Sennheiser MKH-30. Any other SD figure-8 microphone/capsules?

I dn't know much about them, but I did speak to Larry a while back.  He said, not surprisingly, that he and the beta testers really liked the line, that they had single digit self noise specs (I presume A-weighted for the LD cap) and that the small caps are pretty darn flat and accurate.

I'm very intrigued to whether they'll work with AKG C480/460's (are they 22mm?) as I'd really like to have a figure of 8 capsule to use with them for M/S and possibly Native B-Format.

As far as small diaphragm single diaphragm mics go there's also the Royer SF-1 (ribbon) and I believe MBHO made one (although I can't seem any info on it anywhere).  If anyone knows any more, I'd really like to know.

Oh, and hello- I think this may be my first post after quite a bit of lurking.

even if they were the same size would they be compatible with the AKG's?

ADK is an Austrian mic company, but they (similar to AKG) might have a Chinese factory that produces their...uh...most affordable mics.

they're 19mm

I thought 19mm was the C451 diameter- just checked the datasheet (p11) and the C480 is 21mm.

close, but oh well...

Still no info on the ADK site, but I called Full Compass yesterday for a quote on some other gear, and asked about these mics. A CHI body and small cap (not lollipop) would be just shy of $750 per mic. Not sure if they have any in stock.
