question on recording.
« on: April 07, 2008, 11:14:21 PM »
So I have Edirol R-09 and I will be attending Radiohead and NIN show soon.  What kind of setting should I have on the R-09? AGC on or off? if off, what level should it be? how could I sneak this little baby in? and when recording, should I cover it with something so no one will notice i'm taping?  I have taped one show, didn't really know what I was doing, but it turned out ok.  I'm a newbie on taping, and it will be alot of help! thank you in advance!!!

ACG off and if you are taping with the internals, it may not be the best method. Better to get yourself a battery box and some external mics.

I taped "America" just for fun last summer with the internal mics since I knew another taper was in the house with external mics. It's a pain to set the levels, to say the least.

We don't talk about stealth methods openly on this board as our posts are read by those whom we are trying to stealth from.

No. Unless you want to ruin your recording. AGC is not for live music. ;)

Check out the Church Audio threads over in the Retail Space section.  Very nice mics for the price and a good place to start.  I'm very happy with mine.

If on a budget, those Church Audio mics above would be my choice.

The Church Audio mic's are basically synonymous with being the best quality:price -ratio mic's on the market. You'll also get a better price contacting him through this site than through eBay.

The one thing I'd mention is that you'll need a battery box or a preamp (one or the other). A battery box is really all that is 'needed'. You can't necessarily just buy a set of microphones and plug it into your recorder, because mics that aren't properly powered usually suffer from distortion at loud volumes. So if you're recording rock shows, you'll need a battery box unless you want to risk having a distorted recording. The internal mic's won't really have that problem since the unit is designed to power them properly, but with external mic's you either need a power source, or a mic that is specifically designed to run from the power of your recorder. And I believe a mic which is designed to run off of 2.5v can distort easier than other mic's anyway, so that might not be your best option. I believe you can get a cheap homemade battery box for as cheap as $20-30, and it likely wouldn't be much bigger than the size of a 9V battery.

With that said, some people have pulled off recordings using just mics and a recorder, with no other power source. Some recorders provide more power than others, for instance I think the Marantz 620 provides about twice as much plug-in power as the R09, but I'd like to know if that's correct or not. The key there though is that you would record from a distance, or record shows that aren't extremely loud, so that you're not pushing the limits of a microphone that isn't powered correctly. You just have to remember that if you try it, it's playing with fire, and you can end up with varying degrees of unnecessary distortion.

As for your original question... AGC off, Low Cut off, and mic gain on Low. I'm sure you figured out that last one on your own, but beginners have ruined recordings by not using the correct gain setting. If you're not familiar with adjusting your recordings in audio editing programs afterwards, then you could try putting the Low Cut on for bass-heavy rock bands, but it could ruin a recording and it would be risky. I've never used it either way but people have posted samples of the internals in the past with the Low Cut on, if memory serves. It's risky and it's not advised, but you could always try it out on local bands/shows that don't mean much to you.
Setting the levels will depend on a large number of factors... how loud the show is, how close you are to the speakers and PA setup, and the venue you're in. I'd start at about 8 if you're going to be close to the sound source, and work your way from there... maybe go up to 9 10 or 11, or even 13, depending how far you are. If you're even further away then you could try to push it higher than that as long as you think the volume is still low, but it's always safer to stay on the low side. The levels really depend on how loud the show is and where you are in relation to the stage and speakers.

also, how do people bring in the mic...and the batterybox to shows? I've always wondered how...if someone could help me in that department, that would be awesome.  I'm sure all those can't fit in one crotch area right??
