if you just hit the box's it will do it for you (form the textfile) so no need to do it song by song etc.

edit:  creator will be band name and album will be the date venue etc.

Yes, hit both boxes. You can't do it until you fill in the top part of the form, which is why it isn't done automatically...

The first question I have is will a single MD5 check sum file be enough to roll with or can I / should I paste the flac fingerprint in that space as well?  And what about headers that Traders Li'l Helper places on the MD5/ffp files, any trouble with those?
Paste em both in if you have'em. Personally I hate the Traders lil helper files. They NEVER check out properly on my mac using xACT because of the comment lines!

The second problem I have that was not covered in the Tyler doc is that it seems that a "?" as a place holder for an unknow tune name results in all those files being misread or at least pushed to the bottom of the forms at the bottom of the page.  As I recall my format might have done me in as well, as I inset the "?" by one blank space "_?" on the line in the text file that I pasted in to satisfy the setlist portion near the top...   (Will the forms up date if I go and edit that text info and mash the populate bars again???   Nope, didn't work.  >:()  Can I edit the tag info as to the correct track number and edit the blank song names that I see with "unknown" and expect things to correct up?
If you don't know a song title, leave the field blank in the metadata part, and the system will keep the file named as the original file, i.e. foobar2008-05-30d1t07.  The system doesn't update instantly after you change stuff, so you might have to wait 5-10 minutes and then reload the page again to see what it looks like. If you change a file name, and you want to have the flash-player display the correct title, then you'll have to delete the relevant lossy file(s) using the ftp interface, and then REDERIVE. This is also required in order to fill in metadata for lossy files if you change anything after the fileset is first derived. For instance, if you find out a correct title for a song then you will have to delete the lossy files for it, and rederive in order to have the correct info show up in your music player software when the track is downloaded.  Be sure to delete the ZIP files if you are going to rederive, otherwise they will contain the old versions of the metadata.

The other little things that bug me are near the top on lines that are not required:
The four boxes below the Subject/key word search fill in area.  What's a newbie to do there?
I put "Live Concert; Audience recording" or "Live Concert; Matrix of Soundboard and Audience sources" in the keyword search, or I will put related info for the show, like the largest nearby city for shows in little suburbs. Separate the keywords with semicolons.

How do you rederive?  I need to do this, but I'm not sure how.  I use SmartFTP, if that makes any difference.  Also, if you rederive does it reset the number of times downloaded?  I ask because this is my first show to go over 1,000 downloads and I don't wanna lose that stat (yeah, I know I'm stupid).

Once you have deleted the files you want to rederive, you go to the ITEM MANAGER screen for the fileset and click REDERIVE. Then you gotta wait for it to do it's thing. Shouldn't take more than 15-30 minutes for most live shows.

edit: it will not reset your download count. Go ahead and make the changes.

Thanks, Morst.  I need to  bone up on that rederive business too.  Looks like I bolixed up the set list some on my second upload.  It works OK but it looks like crap. :P  The question I had, requoted above, was what to make of the boxes Below the key word search field.   I can't seem to get a cursor to activate in any of them but I wonder what good are they and if I should worry about them at all.

All in all this process is not too much work really and I like the fact that I can always get to the shows if need be.

Thanks for your responce, maybe you can help out Jackdog and me with this other editing stuff.  +T

Oh, and I was going to bug you about this too, how do you get pix to show up on the pages?  Sometimes I have a few concert shots and I know you've done this.

The fields that you can't put a cursor in are filled in by the system. I have a hunch that the curators of the site could edit that info, but normal members cannot.

To add photos or posters, just put the gif or jpg images in the folder. The one with the filename which alphabetizes first will be the one which appears on the listing screen and in the old flashplayer. If you want, just add "A1" to the start of the filename for your favorite photo, or the scan of the concert poster and it will pop to the top. Sometimes it's fun to make an animated GIF of a series of photos, and use that for the image!

Congrats O-Canis.  Glad you're starting to upload to the archive.  You're right...once you understand how everything works, it's really pretty simple and straightforward.  Also, you really do have control of most everything that goes up there, even after it's all be uploaded.  You've been a TS.com member for quite some time, so if you're just now getting to know to upload to the archive, I suspect you've got lots of uploading to do!  Find yourself a fast T1 line and you can get lots of shows uploaded in a short amount of time!!!

+T for uploading to the archive!

Looks like Tom's got you covered mostly, but I'll chime in as well.

1) Yes, it's correct that the fields you can't touch are only editable by moderators, and are used for filing your concert in the proper area. You actually choose them when you first import the show, by choosing the "etree" area and then choosing the band.

2) Keywords are great when used properly. Keep in mind that all of the other fields are searchable as well, so putting the venue/city/state there is generally pointless, but the nearest big city is useful, as well as a musical "style" if you want to put that in there.

3) The "?" skipping thing is definitely an annoyance - it also comes into play when you have a venue or some other line that starts with a number (9:30 Club, for example). The parser is usually pretty good but some characters do confuse it now and again. I'd suggest using "Unknown" instead of "?" so that the parser knows it's reading a track name and not some weird variable. The only way to fix that is to check the show back out and upload a new text file *before* you import. Otherwise, the Flash player and mp3's get created and tagged with the wrong info and you have to delete all of the non-FLAC files and re-derive.

How do I check this back out and edit the notes?  Where's this item manager link?

Go to archive and navigate to your show.  Make sure you're logged in...if you're an anonymous user, you won't be able to do the following...

Down the left side, there are a series of links.  At the bottom of the list under 'Resources' is a link for EDIT ITEM.

Click 'Edit Item'

When the next page comes up, several lines down is a link 'item manager'...click that link.

On the last page, a couple lines down there is a button you can choose to check-out your item and make changes to the metadata.

That should do ya!

Important facts about editing LMA posts-

1- When you make a change to metadata, it does NOT show up instantly! I normally find that it takes between 5 and 15 minutes for metadata changes to be reflected on the listing page.

2- You can access the list of all your recent activity at this link if you are a member - http://www.archive.org/catalog.php?justme=1

3- The archive has been behaving strangely for the past several days- I have a show that has been stalled out waiting to derive lossy files for about 5 days now, and Tyler (one of the Curators) told me that he could not get it to start deriving, so some patience will be called for. I have not been able to check in this one show that I've been working on for most of a week now, although I uploaded two new ones without issues in that time.

4- if you put a .MD5 checksum file in the directory, and there is a problem with any files, you will receive a detailed email telling you where the problems are.

I hope this helps you out.

yer pal, morsty
