I've been going to concerts since 1979.  Did a little bit of taping in the 80's (Dead) with a buddy (back in the day with a Walkman Pro and AKG mics).  I'm totally out of the loop when it comes to gear.

I'd like to spend around $500-$600 for everything. I don't mind buying used equipment. Any suggestions?  I've been told that the Edirol card readers are nice.  I've seen that some people are still using the CL Nomad.

I don't know if it matters, but the music I would probably be recording includes My Morning Jacket, Wilco, Beck, Flaming Lips.

Thanks

i just recently sold an edirol UA-5 and an iriver H120 for 325 dollars.  find a similar setup and some mics and you are good to go for that price range.

for the price range you could go with some SP or CA mics and a pre into a r09
for slightly more you could prob go with a ua5 and a mt/jb3 and say some c4 mics

there are more options but off the top of my head those are 2
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

I'm in a similar situation (upgrading old school gear). I ended up w/ a Fostex FR-2LE (Oade) and some AKGs. It's kind of weird using the memory cards and being able to fit so much media on such a little card. I feel like I'll end up  losing it easily.
Let us know what you end up getting. -Mike

I don't know what any of those are with the exception of the r09 (Edirol, I assume).  Please explain.  I really am a novice.

Go to 'Start Here' > 'Where to Begin' in the main page. Brian Skalinder has a ton of posts that helped me. Also The Oade Bros web site has a lot of helpful info.

After the first couple posts, I figured I'd just wait and not pay too much attention.. maybe see if more opinions would come. But now after 2 more additional posts have been made saying the same thing about the rig he should buy... isn't a UA-5 really only for open taping? Hey, I'd like one myself. But those bands he mentioned can't all allow taping. What am I missing? When I originally read his first post I immediately thought it'd have to be something a little more stealth-friendly. I question that some of those, like Beck, would openly allow setting up such gear and open recording. Maybe someone can pass along some policies/links or info for all of those bands because it's coming as news to me if that kind of equipment is actually suitable.

I've stealthed with my UA-5...but I had to use Jedi Mind Tricks.

If I were to build a STEALTH rig for $600 I would buy a used R-09 and spend the rest on a the nicest set of Church Audio mics and Church Audio Pre-amp, that I could get with the remaining funds.

I personally prefer to stealth with omni caps (so I don't have to stand so still), but if you go to shows with chatty people you might want to go with cards. Ideally get both so you can swap them depending on the situation.

Oh, and anonymous...Beck is the only artist listed in the first post that isn't 100% open taping.

Come to think of it...I didn't tape Beck with the UA-5. I have taped the rest fully open.

If I could only have one of my rigs, it would undoubtedly be my open rig. I'd rather tape open. Stealthing is a nice option...but I could live without recordings of most of the non-taper friendly bands I listen to. Or at the very least I'd rather have a nicer open rig, and a very basic stealth rig.
