Best Places To Buy NEW Mics?
« on: May 15, 2008, 07:09:08 AM »
OK Im getting ready to bite the bullet and throw down on some new mics. Im pretty much set on some AKG c480b's. A bit pricey, but not as over the top as the nuemann, schoeps, etc... and to my ears they sound Oh so sweet.

Is there a particular retailer/store that anyone would suggest I should use over any others? So far I guess about the best price I've found is micsupply.com. I can pick up the C 480 B Body w/ CK 61 capsule for $800 per body/cap combo, so around $1600 for the pair. they've also got the hpyer CK 63 caps for another $279 per cap.

Another quick question, is there an omni cap made for these mics? And do they work well with a UA-5?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

the CK62 caps are the omnis that accompany the 480 bodies...

and, every 481/483/482 > UA-5 combo that i've heard sounds great

$1600/pair is not a bad deal for a new pair at all

These places may not have your mics but its still a possibility to check out:

bhphotovideo.com
soundprofessionals.com
sweetwater.com

I have ordered from all three and I have no beef or issues with any of them at all.

Talk too Robert Hatch at Full Compass.  1800-356-5844  wait for the prompt dial 0 then ask for Robert Hacth.
I am sure he can give you a killer deal on 480's.

If your buying Gefells, neavton or Pearl buy from the guys in the Yard, its family thing.  Mic supply is cool too...Dave is also a taper..........

Depends on what you mean by BEST, too.  Sometimes paying a little more for something is worth the trade off for more favorable return policies, service, general questions, fast shipping, etc.

For top notch customer service and knowledgeable guys all around you might try Warren and Shane at Front End Audio (http://www.frontendaudio.com)

If you like straight shooting and no BS you could try Mercenary Audio (http://www.mercenaryaudio.com) too.  Watch out for Fletcher though, I heard he bites... ;D

Looks like you want to buy new, but if you're patient 480s show up on the YS quite often.  You could also post an ISO in case there's anybody out there thinking about selling and needs a little nudge to make the decision.  FWIW, these have been going used for less than $1K including the CK61 capsules.

Listen to some Beyerdynamic MC930 recordings.  (I've got lots @ http://Soundmann.com.)  You should be able to get these (a matched pair, no less) for $700-800 if you look around.  You can't go wrong with these mics IMO.
