That looks really nice...It is almost $400 cheaper than the 414 and likely sounds really sweet.

But, you could score a AT4050 for the same price.  If the 214 comes down in price (it likely will), it will rock the party!

And judging from the P48 voltage, its must be an electret too.  I wonder AKG is about to unvail a complete updated electret line?  Now that would be cool.

spyder9, how do you arrive at the conclusion that this must be an electret design? The spec sheet references a patent which I downloaded and read; nothing there mentions or (to me) implies an electret.

yeah but for people that use this mic exclusively for instrument/amp micing on the road it works great b/c that is the main setting that they use on the 414s. Now they don't have to worry about setting pickup pattern and getting the same performance at a lower cost. May not be the best all around mic for a taper, but it has its place in the market. I am sure they will sell well.

I ran my 414's cards 90% of the time. But I'm also a creature of habit.

Voltage, my friend!  The variance is always a dead giveaway.   ;)

That means nothing!  My Beyerdynamic MC930 will also power off 12-48V.  In fact, I run them off 18V in the field.  They are externally polarized condenser.  How?  They have an internal DC-DC converter that bumps the input up to 50V for the capsule.  The electronics runs off something like 10V.
