Topic: Questions About Boosting The Volume on a show

I just recorded a show last weekend and am looking for reccomendations for software to use to raise the volume. Also once I decide the software I am gonna try out, how exactly should I do it.

I am not really familiar with alot of the technical terms on this site so if you can dumb it down for a noob here I would really appreciate it.

Download and install Audacity; a free, open source, multi-platform audio editor.
Import the wav file of the show.
highlight entire file
from one of the menus, select amplify (how much depends on where the signal peaks), when happy with results, save/export or whatever audacity's option is

I'm not at a comp that has Audacity on it so can't be more specific. Audacity does have a rudimantary help file which will explain the basics, but not much else. If all you want to do is boost the signal, it is all you'll need and it can do many other things as your editing needs expand.

I just started to play around with Audacity and found it really easy to use for raising the volume. I raised it -.5 db and am very happy with the results. I tried to amplify at -1.0db and it started to sound distorted.
