iRiver h140 CRC-Error when copying a file
« on: June 23, 2008, 06:38:06 AM »
Hi there!

I've got a big problem with a recording on my h140!

It's a wav file ~700mb!

When trying to copy it to my internal hdd I'm getting a CRC-Error halfway through the copy process...

Importing the file into any audio editing programm also does not work...

Copying the file within the iRiver's hdd also results in an error :(

The problem is just with this one single file! The only good thing is, I can play the full file in Windows Media Player and VLC (just tested these 2 players)...

I've got WinXP and the iRiver's hdd is formated in FAT32!

Any idea on how to solve this problem?
Cheers

I'm having the same problem with my h120. I think the hard drive is dying. The errors have been happening with increased frequency. I may have to go optical out to get the music off. Sometimes the copy will work on like the tenth try.

Looking into the CF card upgrade.

Your HDD is dying. You can run defrag and check error on HDD test on win XP so you can "recover" the file. (worked for me yesterday and a few times in the past)
Just came yesterday with 18 shows recorded from an open air festival into a fresh formatted iriver ihp-120 and two files were unable to transfer. Ran defrag and check errors and the transfer went OK.

CF mod should be the next step to follow. Your HDD will make you suffer again and again.

OK and now please give me a tutorial on how to defrag and check the iriver's drive!

Which programs do I need?

What's CF Mod? You mean Compact Flash card mod  ;D

When I had a similar problem with my iRiver H120 a year or so ago I think I used  chkdsk /f or /r (can't remember which, I may have tried both)  on the iriver drive, running the command from the windows command line DOS prompt.  I could then copy the file across to my PC.

Drives are cheap for these...

i just changed mine out in my 120

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-TOSHIBA-20GB-MK2004GAL-1-8-HARD-DRIVE-W-WARRANTY_W0QQitemZ290233865659QQihZ019QQcategoryZ56084QQcmdZViewItem

26.99 for the 20GB and its easy to change out (make sure you have a T5 Torx Wrench too)

CRC Errors are definitely the death cry of the hdd.  I've had that happen on more than one unit, and replacing the hdd is the best solution.  I've heard of some folks scanning the drives and attempting to partition out the bad sectors, but a new hdd is the way to go if you have the funds.

Let me do a little explanation ;D

The file which was originally stored on the iriver did copy flawlessly!

I never ever had any CRC-Errors, thus I don't think my hdd is dying...

I just cut it out once and stored it for a few days on my internal hdd (situation is a bit complicated, because all my hdd are almost full) and copied it back to the iriver's hdd, then this CRC-Error happened... :-\

chkdsk did not help at all! I did chkdsk "HDD letter" /f /s

Any further suggestions?

What if I re-record the file through audacity?

Is it then considered to be lossy if I play it on VLC or Windows MP and re-record it through my soundcard?

HELP!
Cheers

So basically, this is the first time you ever got a CRC Error when transferring files on this unit.  The error came up because of bad sectors on the hdd.  If you are just using it for a player, I would wait and see what happens.  If you plan on uploading / downloading a bunch of files on it you will probably see the CRC Error again.  I would personally use it as a player for now, but would not trust it to record a show hoping that I could transfer the show off of there without a CRC Error.

What do you mean by chkdsk did not help at all?  Did chkdsk actually scan the disc?  How long did it take?

If the file won't copy off of the iriver and chkdsk didn't work, use this:
http://www.jfilerecovery.com/

It essentially copies the file, and when it encounters the CRC error, it steps past the error then continues copying the file.

Be sure of checking your file closely. It should be a gap somewhere due to the bad sector (CRC Error). Just in case you want to edit...
