Connecting SMK4060 kit to Edirol R-09?
« on: July 02, 2008, 06:14:28 AM »
I was under the impression that connecting a pair of DPA4060s (in the form of a SMK4060 kit) to an Edirol R-09 was a matter of inserting the MPS6030 between the mics and the recorder.

Then someone told me I would also need a phantom power source (the DAO0135), in *addition* to the MPS6030.

Is this correct? Or will a SMK4060 => MPS6030 => R-09 suffice?

Also, what's the main difference between DPA4060 and 4061?

I will be using them to record everything from sound effects to field recording (soundscapes).

Any advice welcome, and pardon if I am treading old territory.

The DAO0135 isn't a phantom power source, it's a 1/8" male to male cable. This is something you would indeed require to connect the MPS6030, which has a 1/8" output to the R-09, which has a 1/8" input. You don't need any phantom power anything - the MPS6030 is what powers the mics.

The DAO0135 isn't your only option though, there's a whole world of cables you can select. I believe Hydra cables are quite popular: http://www.hydra-audio.com/

And the main difference between the 4060 and 4061 mics is that the 4060s are more sensitive than the 4061s, so the 4061s can handle higher SPLs.

Ah, ok - figures. Seems there have been some misunderstandings along the way!

Also, I got a price quoted for the cable of about $80, which seems kind of (even way too) expensive for such a straightforward solution.

Btw, I guess the DPA4060 would be less hissy than its sibling, the 4061, considering their sensitivity? Also, is the 4060 a whimp in terms of sound pressure? Will it peak too easily?

I recorded Widespread Panic this weekend with my 4060's. It was pretty loud, and the recording sounds great.

If you don't mind spending a little more get the DPA MMA6000 preamp. It's a little bigger than the MPS6030, but will improve your recordings greatly.

If the cable you're talking about is the DPA one that threads into the output of the MMA6000/MPS6030, get it if you can. It's a nice bonus that you have that secure connection, especially when you are stealthing.

That cable does sound like a good idea - but I wouldn't recommend plugging into an R-09. It's got a big, meaty straight 1/8" plug on it. Unless you have reinforced the input jacks inside your R-09 with some epoxy, a plug like that will eventually rip the sockets off the PCB.

I have epoxied my R-09, but I still use a very small right-angled 1/8" plug into the R-09 to keep it safe.
