Phantom power mics with Edirol R-09?
« on: July 26, 2008, 04:28:28 AM »
I'm a noob when it comes to Phantom power, so:

How would one go about connecting a pair of phantom powered mics to the Edirol R-09?

Could I just buy this ... (Denecke PS-2)

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/406897-REG/Denecke_PS_2_PS_2_Portable_Dual.html

Then just connect a couple of XLR to 1/8" cables from the PS-2 to the R-09?

I have used one of these into an R-09. Battery powered & mains.
Works great.

Soundpros sells a PS2 modded with a "hardwired" male mini plug cable out. It is a lot less bulky than using the dual xlr>mini plug cable method. Its about the same price too,as compared to when you have to buy the additional cable.

I notice the Rolls PB224 battery operated phantom power supply is quite a bit cheaper than Sound Professionals' modded Denecke. The former costs $85 at B&H, the latter costs $199.

Is there a significant difference in quality between these two? (though I can definitely see an advantage with the hardwired 1/8" output on the Soundpros mod)

And do these power supplies connect to line in or mic in on the R-09?

Thanks for all the advice!

Mic in. These are just phantom power supplies, not mic-preamps so your R-09 will have to do all the heavy-lifting as far as preamplification is concerned. Can't answer your other questions.

You will have no problems recording moderate to loud sources, just don't expect a pristine hiss-free result if you try recording bird-song with the R-09 internal preamp.

Here's the kind of cable you may need to get...

Battery boxes have a wide range of prices.  Sony's XLR-1 provides phantom power and has a built in short cable to connect to the recorder.  Price $450!  At the other end of the spectrum, the ART Phantom II  costs about $50.  I have not heard a demonstration that shows any audible differences in results.

I see. Any recommendations for a good, portable, battery powered pre-amp? ;)

I am starting to think I might just go for the DPA 4060 and their MPS 6030 battery box (I'm guessing this is also mic in, not line in?). Perhaps it will make life easier?

Hmm.

Not yet, unfortunately - it's just one of the options I am considering.

Should I get some condenser mics (Countryman B6?) and a 48v box, or should I spend some more and get the 4060s and the MPS6030?

Which will be better with the R09 for effects recording, field recording, and some quiet recording in between?

etc. etc.

DPAs are very good mics, but honestly..there are a few other mics that will get results of equal quality for less $. The **MAJOR** difference with the DPAs vs. the others (of comparable quality) is the size. They are fucking tiny.
Then you have to decide whether you want to run cards or omnis..
Best thing to do is get a bunch of recordings with different sources and then just choose which mic (or rig) produces the results you like the majority of the time.

oivindi, the R-09's microphone inputs are unbalanced. Since professional microphones have balanced outputs, you either have to provide a way of balancing the inputs of the R-09 (e.g. an in-line input transformer for each channel) or a way of "unbalancing" the signals from the microphones.

Unfortunately there is no standard way to "unbalance" a signal; instead, there are four different methods, each of which is the right one to use for certain microphones. Any one type of adapter, plug or cable that you choose will be wrong for some microphones. And unfortunately, many people who are otherwise fairly knowledgeable about microphones and recording seem to be unaware of this situation, so they can and will give the wrong advice about it.

It's really simplest (by far!) when people use the general type of microphone that a recorder was designed for--unbalanced microphones for recorders with unbalanced microphone inputs, and balanced microphones for recorders with balanced microphone inputs. But if you have professional (i.e. balanced) microphones and you really want to feed their signals to a recorder with unbalanced inputs, often the best solution is to use a mike preamp that has balanced inputs--then feed the preamp's outputs to the recorder's line level inputs.

That approach tends to avoid problems with both noise (unbalanced microphone inputs tend to be noisy) and overload (unbalanced microphones tend not to be as sensitive as professional, balanced microphones, and especially with loud music the latter type of microphone can overload inputs that were designed for consumer-type microphones).

Do you have some brands / model names for me? I wouldn't mind some recommendations. :)

I'm a bit picky about noise/self-noise, but aren't we all.
