Is one of my mics starting to die on me?
« on: August 10, 2008, 10:44:50 PM »
The last few shows Ive had to tape I have to turn up one channel of the MMA6000 two or three clicks because one channel is coming in much softer then the other.  Its not the pre because sometimes its the left and sometimes its the right.  So I can only assume that one mic has lost of of its sensitivity.  Ive had my 4061s for just over 2 years and when I first got them they were with in 1.5db of each other.

Here are some screen shots of the last few tapes Ive made.  Not only did I have to turn one channel up a few clicks on the pre it seems to get progressively quieter the longer i record.  The battery only has a few hours on it and is still blinking green

When the recordings first start both channels are with in about 1db or so of each other but at the end of a 75 min set or so they are as much as 6db off.

Send that puppy in for repair.  It sounds like the FET is failing in one mic.  You may as well send both and have them looked over.  If these are dumpster 4061's you cannot get any help for DPA as an original owner with a warranty.  DPA builds good stuff so it is surprising to see one fail.  But nothing is perfect.

i bought the set from grider in march 06 and i think he said he only had them for a short while and was not using them enough to justify keeping them.  I guess ill have to call dpa and see how much it will cost to fix/replace it.

What is the FET?

It is a type of transistor, a Field Effect Transistor.  They are often used in the circuits of this type of hardware.

Well apparently it was a bad battery.  It wasn't blinking red but as soon as I put a new one in the mma6000 everything was working A-OK.

+t for you boojum for your advice.

Good show!  Batteries are so much cheaper than repairs.  I did not realize you had batteries in the chain.

Yeah, just a 9v.  I though id only had about 10 hours or so on it but maybe I had more.  I used to replace the battery every month but because I've seen less shows this summer then normal i've slacked on that.
