I think i'm convinced that EW mics running into a warmer/punchier colored preamp is a good thing.
any transformer based pre...., or I bet a MME would sound great.  As soon as I get a patch from Joe, i'll seed my RRE recording from upnorth and you can hear for yourself.

Earthworks are sold as being the most "accurate" mics available, but they are designed to be used 6" from the source, with the proximity effect taken into consideration.  When you move away to a distance of more than a few feet, you end up with a significant bass rolloff (down 3db@150hz, with 12dB/decade).  The result, in my opinion, is a nice clean crisp sound, but depending on the situation, it can be thin in the bottom end.  The Hypers seem to have more rolloff than the cards, and I guess that's not surprising.  If you love "booty bass" then these aren't your mics, but I like what I get, not hyped, just "what you hear is what you get".

I've had the cards for about 5 months, and the hypers for about 1 month, so I'm still experimenting, and still forming opinions.  At the moment I like the SR77 cards into the V3, but for the Z30XL hypers the Warm/Vintage mod channels on my R4 seem like my best option, and Nick's M148 is really sweet.

Earthworks always amazes me. How they take a cheap Panasonic capsule and make it sound so good. They are masters at building mics. Some of the things they do inside are pretty intelligent and very advanced as far as mic design is concerned very underrated.

I wonder if they use something better than "cheap" capsules.

I've noticed that there are some *really* nice sounding small omni caps out there. My two favourites now are the Sennheiser KE4 and the Countryman B3.  They are both a bit smaller than the Panasonic (5mm diameter).  The Senns have a gold plated mylar diaphragm.  Tons of detail, a bit on the warm side.  The Countryman (apparantly) have a stainless steel diaphragm, very natural sounding, just a bit warm, not harsh at all.  All I can say, is holy shit these sound fantastic.  Better than most "full size" or "professional" mics I've heard.  Take a listen to some samples I've got at Soundmann.com.

I would love to know who manufactures the Countryman capsules.  I'm sure they are from somewhere else, but the question is where.  Also, I would not be surprised to see the Sennheiser capsules in other manufacturers' products, maybe even the Earthworks .
