Fission - CD Wave for OS X!
« on: August 18, 2008, 12:09:13 AM »
I found a new piece of software today that is very similar to CD Wave, but designed for Mac (Tiger and Leopard OS's).

Unfortunately, it's not free.  You can upgrade to the full version for $32.  I am going to buy it, it looks to be by far the easiest and lightest tracking program that I've seen, without having to open a full editing suite just to split files.  You can also normalize, rename, and add metadata to the resulting files.  Pretty cool- very easy to use on the fly or quickly scrolling through the wave.

Also, the trial is very limited-- it will put fades in your saved files, so it's useless beyond trying it out.

Slick! +T
"This is a common practice we have on the bus; debating facts that we could easily find through printed material. It's like, how far is it today? I think it's four hours, and someone else comes in at 11 hours, and well, then we'll... just... talk about it..." - Jeb Puryear

CD-Wave isn't free, either - it, too, has a small license fee to pay.  Well worth it for such handy programs.  Nice find!

Yes, I knew this.  I haven't run a PC in years so it usually slips my mind.

Am I the only mac user that uses CD Spindoctor?
It's not free either, but it comes with Toast, which I thought every mac user has.
It's also a pretty close clone to CD-Wave.

Nice find though.

D'oh! Spindoctor.  Forgot all about that little add-on app.  Will have to re-visit it.

Well, the program run 24/96 with no problems!  My recorder splits at 2gb so I didn't have any files >2gb to test with.  Sorry.

Sounds promising. Mine splits at 2GB too, but if I want to combine several before splitting, I want to know that I can. I can always name those tracks XXa and XXb and combine after the fact if necessary. +T for the find!

I just tried this program and I couldn't find a way to split my 24 bit files. Am I just too stupid or does Fission not support 24 bit files?

What did you do?

I just opened a 2Gb 24bit WAV file with Fission, put the "cursor" where I wanted to split the tracks and then pressed Command+T to add the split. Worked as it always does for me.

I just opened a 2Gb 24bit WAV file with Fission, put the "cursor" where I wanted to split the tracks and then pressed Command+T to add the split. Worked as it always does for me.

My source file was a 4.2 GB 24bit/96kHz CAF file (exported from Logic) and it would only recognize that as 16 bit. Unfortunately, Logic does not let me use any other file format like WAV because the resulting file would be over 2 GB.

I ended up just saving the .cue file from Fission and I used another program to convert the CAF to one giant FLAC file. I wrote myself a small Perl script that used the .cue file to convert each track to WAV individually. Needless to say I don't want to do this for every show that I tape, so I'm looking for other options now.
