Quick HD-P2 Question
« on: August 18, 2008, 09:56:21 PM »
Hey folks I have a quick question that I'm sure the answer is right in front of me but here it goes.  What causes the p2 to mark "takes" in the recording and can I get the P2 to stop?  I know the 2 hour limitation but I just did a recording that was 1:45 long but has like 12 takes on it what's the deal?
Thanks
Patrick

bingo, it creates multiple takes until you start a new project.

No actually it's a new project it just has a bunch of random takes in the recording.  I've only had the unit for like 4 shows and they all have it.  Do I have some default or something screwed up?
Thanks for your help.

You can set the max file size between 512MB and 2GB (not 2 hours!!) in the project menu (this may have been moved to the System Defaults menu as of v1.04 - I don't have my HDP2 handy to check). It should default to 1.5GB.

If you are recording at 24 bit/96 khz you generate 33mb of data per minute and you would get a new take every 15 minutes with the max file size set to 512Mb, or every 60 minutes with max file size of 2Gb.

The HDP2 will also start a new take if you press the record button while you are recording. It's pretty handy if you want to   seamlessly start a new take at a specific point, but could be causing your problem if you aren't aware of this behavior. This was introduced in v1.04 and is mentioned only in the firmware update release notes.

cheers
Paul

Are you talking about Takes or Markers? Takes come from stopping and starting the deck, but you may have it set to drop in markers at specific intervals. Or as noted above you may have your file splits set at 512. Below is some info on time based markers from the manual.

Time-based markers are used to quickly identify and
locate specific points in your project. The HD-P2 has
dedicated buttons for creating and navigating between
markers. Additionally, there are optional project settings
for automatically placing markers in the case of
events like input signal clipping and timecode dropouts.
Markers are not erased during recording.
Markers are part of the current project and not associated
with individual audio files. A marker consists of a
project time and a name. Marker names are automatically
created using the current project’s marker naming
preferences.
