Mini-MP > A/D?? Suggestions > R-4 BM T-mod
« on: September 01, 2008, 09:19:01 AM »
Just picked up a mini-mp and was wondering what a/d would work well with r-4 busman t-mod.  I gonna try analog in with the r-4 with the gain of the mmp doing the work (I know i would pick up some flavor of the mod).  Any mimi-mp users have suggestions?

Thanks, Ted

Your signature line lists the Edirol R-09. If you still have that, I would run the MiniMP > line in on the R-09.

I owned an MiniMP for about a year and ran it into my Edirol R-1 with great results. The R-09 is a step up so i would imagine improved results. You will need a stereo XLR to 1/8" cable to do this.

This of course assumes that you wanted to strictly do 2 channel vs 4 channel in R-4.

Those are my thoughts. The MiniMP is a fanastic pre. I am very pleased with my Busman T-Mod FR2LE, but I did like the sound of my MiniMP better.

A Korg MR-1 would make a nice combo.

Why do you need an A/D if you have an R-4?  Doesn't the R-4 already have a high quality A/D built in?

Anyway, check this for an MMP directly into my unmodded PMD-620, which some say sounds as good as an R-09, but others say not so good...personally, I like!

Or check this into the line in of Busman mod HD-P2, which does A/D just fine...

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with the MMP into the handheld R-09 OR a full-sized all-in-one.

Also, the R-4 resmaples the digital input, so it is kinda pointless to try using an external A/D with the Edirol units unless you have an R-4 Pro or R-44.

Gonna stick with straight mmp > r-4.

Thanks, +T's all around.

I think thats a good choice. Since you have a T-Mod R4, it should have a minimal effect on the sound that the MiniMP is feeding it.

The R-4's s/pdif input is useless because it cannot/does not lock on to the incoming digital stream.  Rather, it re-samples/re-clocks it and you end up with different data than the original source.

Of the Edirol recorders, only the R-4 Pro and R-44 can lock onto an incoming digital stream (AES and coax s/pdif respectively) and capture it 'bit-perfectly' or 'sample-accurately.'
