EAC Problem
« on: September 06, 2008, 01:10:58 AM »
So my desktop computer is having EAC issues. I normally use Samplitude to extract discs when I plan on doing any editing, but for normal ripping, I use EAC, or at least I used to. My pc doesn't recognize drives with EAC, but every other program sees the drives. It's hard to extract a disc with EAC when it doesn't see a drive :)

I have uninstalled and reinstalled EAC with no luck. Anyone have any bright ideas that they would like to share???

gracias....

Which OS, version, and service packs?
Which version of EAC?   (ver. v.0.99 PreBeta 4 is the latest) from here:
http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/en/index.php

EAC is a better ripper than Samplitude, but can be a speedbump in the workflow.
On a marginal CD, it is the best way to ensure high fidelity in the extraction of a waveform from a .cda file.

usage guide: (for those checking into the thread)
http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Exact_Audio_Copy

CD programs use drivers to "see" the CD drives.
I haven't had to hassle with these since Windows98 and some old CD audio burner that had a eagle GoldenHawk in it's company name.  (no ticks!- perfect disc-at-once from cuesheets(!) with CDRWIN...old school, however, amazing in the day)
Adaptec ASPI drivers live here:
http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/
but it would be strange to need these with WinXP... what brand and type of CD drive?

Since WindowsXP, my CD is almost always recognized, or a reboot fixes it.

Do other programs, such as WinAMP, Windows Media Player, Foobar, etc., "see" and play your CD?
or only Samplitude?

Every program sees both my cd drives, except for EAC. I have tried 10 different versions of EAC (including eac-0.99pb4) and none of them work. I have removed old versions before installing new versions. I am running XP Media Center OS. It stooped working with SP2 and SP3 didn't help any.

edit:
I am using a lightscribe drive that came with the computer and a plextor.

Not that it helps, but I've got the same problem with my Dell Desktop with XP with EAC not recognising the disc drive.  Works fine on my wife's laptop with Vista.  I've tried multiple versions as well.  Its not a major issue for me because I can use the laptop, but like the OP it would be good to know how to solve this one.

Charlie & Pontiacb,
It seems that EAC needs older ASPI drivers than what is included in XP.

Try this...

Thanks. I'll try it. It's odd because all of my other XP machines work fine. This one worked for 2 years then EAC just stopped working. Musta been some windoze update that killed it.

I'd get my ASPI layer here:

http://www.download.com/Adaptec-ASPI-Drivers-Windows-98-Me-NT-2000-XP-/3000-2098_4-10161912.html

CNET (www.download.com) has a reputation for oversight and is generally a safer place to get stuff.

What's up with the spinning pentagram logo in the Force ASPI package?  Looks very H@X0rish to me.

Sorry but I has misread this link. You need the newer drivers not the older.

It sounds like something happened to your ASPI layer.  Open up EAC | EAC pulldown menu | EAC Options | Interface.  See if it will allow you to change to another option.  Mine is on Native Win32 Interface and works fine.

Glad that worked Charlie.  Keep an eye on it because it may change itself back after a reboot.

This used to be pretty common for me on older machines when I slipped in a new drive or switched to a new installation of a burning or editing software application.

Bingo x 2 - worked for me as well (I had to close EAC down and re-open it after I followed your instructions).  Its working like a dream.  Thanks for everyone's help and thanks to Charlie for posting the query in the first place.  I would give you all +Ts but don't think I've posted enough to be allowed to.
