BB Recommendations ???
« on: September 06, 2008, 09:23:16 AM »
I've bought a brand new R-09HR and some AT943's and SP 2 BB from the yard sale a while back.

I'm way under impressed with the results.

I've taped about 10 shows so far and not happy with the results generally.

Obviously, the HR being new is fine I'm sure, but I've a horrible suspicion that the BB is not working properly.

I recorded Gary Numan last night. BB set at 107, rec input level at 12 and got a horribly distorted recording. The low level stuff (ie, synth intro's were fine and sounded great - the guitar and drums kicked in and just created a mess). I was about 5 meters in front of the soundboard, but think that I wans't too close, surely 5 meters isn't going to ruin the recording ? I took great care to monitor what the rec. display was doing, and it peaked at 12db on the display, certainly not causing the peak / overload to trigger.

I'm growing rather annoyed at my consistantly poor recordings, and figure that the BB is broke. I want to buy a new one.

can anyone recommend one that's small and easy to use.

Here is the deal... First off you dont need to use a bass roll off with your mics.. They lack bottom end to begin with but they do overload with low freq. You can set your bass roll off to 800 hz the distortion is still going to be there :) Its just now you will have an AM radio sounding recording with no bottom end so you dont hear the distortion as much.. There are only two places where the overloading might be happening. 1- at the mics * using a bass roll off will never fix this * or 2- at the deck only if your using the mic input.  I think you might be better off with AT 853 Mics with my 4.7k MOD if you want better bass and want to stay with AT mics. Also if your using the mic input and I dont know why you would be use the line input. Other then that change your mics to AT853 or check out some of the other mics for sale by other vendors. The other option that might help and again I say might help is to get a three wire battery box and run your mics three wire or try my 4.7K mod on these mics. I have had limited success with this because some of the mics I have tested did benefit from the mod some did not. The only way to tell is to have me check your mics out I only charge return shipping if they cant be modified if they can I charge $20 + return shipping. I test your mics for output level giving you a number in DB as to how far apart they are that way in post you can add the difference to the lower output mic and * match them * as far as level goes * this helps your left and right stereo image. Then I measure the mics for distortion at 114db at 1k if they are at 0.5% or less then do not need the mod if they are at 10% or more they do. If they do I put in a pair of 4.7k hand matched resistors in your mics 3.5 mm connector this mod will allow you to record very loud shows with very little to no distortion. The difference that makes in a recording is very big. After all is said and done I test them again and ship them back to you.

buy a preamp and run line in - that will solve your problem... your mics and recorder are fine.

new battery bought when I got the BB, just a thought though, if I don't take the battery out between uses (ie, when not using) will it drain the battery ?

I have left it in-situ since I bought it ??? Maybe I should take it out after every show, to save juice ?

Low juice in the 9v in your BB causes low end distortion.  Throw a fresh one in and have another go at it.
