I'm completely new to recording, just got my R-09HR recently, and I'm waiting for my CA mics and preamp. Until they come, I was going to try to get a few soundboard feeds into my r-09HR. However, I have no idea what cable to use, and I don't want to sound like a complete idiot when I ask for a feed.

Does anyone have experience with this? What should I use? Do I need to have any specific settings set on the R-09?

You'll need to get a cable made for you to plug into your Line In.  Most soundboards have XLR outs, a large number have a dual 1/4" mono outs, and some have RCA outs.  I've come across all three, but since I typically record in dive bars I've found the dual 1/4" mono to be the most common.  You should set the levels on your R-09HR to whatever the "unity" gain is on it (on the regular R-09 it's 8 ) and raise the levels later on your computer if necessary.

It depends on the age of the board.  Get XLR (2 plugs) to 1/8 inch mini and a 1/4 inch RCA (2 plugs) to 1/8 mini ready for board feeds.  Most modern boards have either XLR or 1/4 inch output, you have to prepared for both. The older ones have RCA output in which case you need RCA stereo (2 plugs) to 1/8 inch mini.  

For the XLR, you have to prepared for both male and female board feeds. I have an XLR to mini cable that allows me to remove the female outs and make them male. I'd say about 75% of the boards I've patched into were male output requiring female (no prongs) cables. The rest were female outputs. If you're only prepared for one, you regret it at the show. Get one you can change gender.

Since you're just waiting for your mics and preamp, you'd might as well try out the internal mics on your R-09HR.  I was in the same boat as you when I ordered my taping rig, and I had about five weeks between the time that I received my R-09 and Church Audio gear.  In that five weeks I recorded with the internal mics once, patched out of another taper once, and patched out of the soundboard three times (the soundguys had the cable I needed twice, so that was nice).  Now that I've got my own rig I'll probably never do any of those things again (I might patch out of a board, but probably not) so it was nice that I got a chance to do all of them.  You should take advantage of your situation in the same way.
