Fixing a DIY J-disk to mic stand?
« on: September 25, 2008, 05:42:45 PM »
Hi all,

I'm building a Jecklin disk (fibre board with felt on both sides) and still trying to figure out how to fix it to a normal mic stand with a 3/8" thread. Any suggestions?

i also did the embroidery hoop thing as Moke described, which worked out great, but since i'm kind of lazy i ended up buying a butterfly mic clip such as this and it works well:

the one i have is made by Proline:

Here is my embroidery disc!  Construction procedure:

1) Cut a 12" disc of 1" thick rigid fiberglass insulation.  I used a Jasper circle jig (for speaker building), except instead of mounting it on a router, I just stuck a small flathead screwdriver through the router bit hole on the jig and cut it manually.

2) Sew up two panels of fabric, 14" diameter, halfway around.

3) Stuff inner hoop & insulation disc inside of fabric.

4) Have spouse sew up the fabric by hand ;D (I did the first bit with a machine)

5) Poke a hole through the fabric with a 3/8" bolt, cut to 1 3/4" length

6) Mount clips on bolt (with large washers)

7) Scavenge a butterfly clip, add three washers as spacers.

and that's it!  I do want to add a hook on the edge as a cable retainer, and probably I'll make some nice RA cables with the leads off at 45 degrees to help guide the cable along the edge.

any field tests with it?

Here are a few pics of my Naiant MSH-1OX in a mini j-disk. A mic clip, CD blank, foam, cable clips, rubber bands, and nylon bolt, screw, and spacers only cost a few bucks. Any suggestions for improvement welcome.
