Topic: DPA (CS HEB) repair? Aaaaargh!

Well, I seem to have a problem with my DPA 4060 (CS HEB).

Taped Riders On The Storm a couple weeks ago.  Would have been excellent, but there are dropouts throughout the recording.  The signal doesn't completely disappear, but drops to about -63dB.  It's not constant, and it's not consistent.  Sometimes it's the left channel, sometimes the right, sometimes both.

I've been using the mic-in on my R-09, since the line-in was busted.  So I figured maybe the mic-in was going as well.  Sent the R-09 off for repair, and used the back-up to record Dickey Betts this weekend.

Same problem. 

Nowhere near as bad, which I believe is due to placement of the gear, which likely resulted in less movement.

• As both mics work & sound great, I doubt it's a mic problem.
• Since either mic can cut out, it's not likely a mic cable issue (doubt both would go at once).
• So it's most likely the battery box itself (either the jack or the "innards")...
• or possibly the cable/jack in, once the splice from the mic cables occurs...
• or the cable out at the in/out jack...
• or the 1/8 mini jack on the out cable, or maybe that cable itself.

Any opinions?  What are my options?  Some people have nothing but negative to say on Core-Sound, while others have never had any problems with service.  This set-up is too much $ just to scrap it, and I love the recordings I've made with it.

ask Chris Church, he might be able to repair them, I wouldn't go back to Len

as a longtime owner of an heb setup, i have NO problems sending the gear to len and having him fix it.

in fact, i have done so - after local shops (and local = hollywood, ca - so these are folks that are supposed to know what they are doing) could not find the problem, or blamed it on the capsule (it wasnt - the problem was the wiring). and the funny thing was that the wiring had been done by someone after i bought the setup from len (switched 1/8 plug with two rca males). anyway, len took the jury-rigged gear, traced the problem, shortened the cabling (per my request), and replaced the mini-xlr>rca sections of the cabling. the setup has worked flawlessly ever since. now, if i recall, i had to pay, but that is to be expected. the bottom line is that he fixed the setup when others couldnt even find the problem. (for the record, the reason i went local first was 'cos time was an issue, and i thought i would get it done quicker locally; it took longer - i should have just sent the mic setup to len in the first place)...

I had the same problem you describe.  Thought for sure it was a failed R-09 jack.  Long story short, a bad cable was the cause.  Some of the wiring/connection had worked itself loose.  A new cable solved the problem.

I had the same problem as well- in my case it turned out that it was the C/S termination of the cable. I believe that the way it was terminated , the ground's for both mics were using the shielding and as a result, over time, the connection to this weak point separated and that is why I got the drop outs.  For other posts on the CS HEB check the following as they may also offer insight as to the cause of your problems. I would suggest Church Audio for the repair. He solved my problems is very honest to work with.

I can fix them send me a pm. I am also offering a preamp mod to this mic that places my ugly preamp circuit inside your existing battery box.

Send 'em back to us for a free check-up.  HEB problems are usually connector related -- easy fixes.
