Best configuration for solo piano & vocals?
« on: October 23, 2008, 04:29:21 PM »
I just got my Shure vert bar and am looking to try something out other than NOS.  The crowd will probably not be chatty.  The caps I have to use: omni, sub-card, card, hyper-.  What do you guys think?

How many mics and how many recording channels do you have to work with?  How much crowd do you want in the recording?

If just two recording channels, two mics and no mixer, and a relatively quiet crowd, I'd go with two omnis on a Jecklin or Schneider Disk mounted about five or six feet in front of the piano, biased toward your playing position.

The omnis have the flattest frequency response down to low bass, and the Disk will give your recording solid perceptual location cues.

If you have more recording channels, more mics or a mixer, I can make other suggestions.  But the one I described can be almost as good as it gets, in many situations.
