FLAC compression irregularity.
« on: October 26, 2008, 04:27:16 PM »
Hope someone can help me out here (I have tried searching and come up with nothing that matches my issue).

I taped a show recently. The tracked .wav (16/44) files total 847mb which is about what I would expect.

I have compressed to Flac using TLH, set to level 8 (I usually use lev 8 as I don't have the fastest upload speeds so any reduction in size of a file I wish to torrent is an advantage). The resulting flacs total 290mb which seems far lower than the usual level of reduction I get.

The music is amped accoustic and the crowd (between tracks) were far louder than the music so I used a little bit of compression to even things out to make it easier to listen to.

Would this have resulted in the smaller size final files or has something else gone amiss.

Any help or a point in the direction of something I have missed is appreciated.

Dave.

Between songs the crowd peaked at about -5dB, music at about -12/14dB.

I know that the artist likes to get the crowd involved, so I deliberately gave myself a little more headroom based on the soundcheck levels/support act, but I suspect the sound guy turned things down a little lower for the main set.
