Complete Nub here....
« on: November 14, 2008, 12:20:15 AM »
So I got a new computer and all I do is run audio/video editing programs on here, store all of my masters on the HD (with hard DAT tape copies as backup)and do my website from it as well.. Here is the thing. I want to start running torrent programs from it as well.

So here is my question... I know for Azereus there are a shit-ton of extras like a whole interface that goes with it and I have an older version of Azereus on my MAC so that I don't get all that extra crap with it... So is there a good torrent program so I can upload my shows to DIME without any extra stuff. I don't have a anti-virus program on my PC cause I think those things are just pure crap and you just don't go to the sites you do not know and you will be fine. (I think I only go to 6-7 sites anyways). I am really worried about getting my computer infected with some BS spyware/trojan/virus etc. etc. and I don't want to get it in a Bittorrent program. So what do you guys run and what do you use on a PC to make torrents? thanks for all the help guys.

signed,

the nub.

I have heard of some problems with 1.8.  1.7.7 is stable and runs great.  ymmv.

Fwiw, my XP system Never gets plugged into the network.  I only use it for audio work and photoshop.  I just don't want the hassle and time to fix it when (not if) it gets infected.  As a result of this conservative strategy, it Just Works.  I use linux for everything else.

I even have an old system (linux) that I dedicate for p2p.  That's all it does, p2p.  A lot of p2p apps are resource intensive when they are very busy. I don't do as much p2p these days so performance concerns are less of an issue.  I use azureus and disable all of the auto-update functions, etc.  There may be better choices under xp.

I hope you run a good hardware firewall and also a software firewall.  There are vast numbers of websites that can infect your browser. Also, a lot of 'reputable' websites get infected and can infect your system.  Of course apps can fairly easily bypass software firewalls. The banner ads on 'trusted' websites often come from untrusted sources. Those banner ads often contain javascript and flash, bad news all around.

If I ran xp as my primary desktop I would probably only do so within a vmware environment... but I'm paranoid about these things ;)

I say keep using your Mac and switch to Transmission (nice simple BT client)
if you want to use your PC for audio then just transfer your files over from your Mac
