3 Channel Mono > Stereo in Sound Forge

Ran 3 channel mono with 2 414 Hypers and a center 460/ck62 omni the other night.  Haven't had a chance to sit down and play with it in sound forge, but was wondering what would be the best way to tackle this project.  I was thinking to paste the left and right into a stereo track, pan/expand then mix in the center omni.

I'm not familiar with Soundforge, but the principle should apply in any software...

I think 1.wav becomes LEFT, 2.wav becomes RIGHT, and copy the omni track 3.wav to both left and right parts of a stereo track, and mix that in like you were doing any other mix.

I think it's simpler to just record 2xstereo and one channel will be flatline, so you copy the omni over to match.  I suppose if you were doing it every day this might save some drive space.

Does soundforge only support mixing from stereo tracks?  That would surprise me.  It seems like in most audio editing software, that you should be able to mix from 3 mono tracks with them panned as you indicate to sum to the ultimate stereo mix:

1.wav = mono left
2.wav = mono right
3.wav = mono center

> bus mix to stereo L/R final mix track when bouncing/rendering.

I'm not sure that doubling up the omni track, vs. just adding/summing it from a mono track, is 'better'...it seems to me that would lead to increased summing from the omni source(s) with the main stereo pair, and to not necessarily be all that helpful (unless it just makes things easier with the workflow in soundforge - which I have no idea about since I've never used SF).  I use Digital Performer, and find it much easier to fine tune a mix working from mono tracks and panning as called for, especially if I want to make any slight adjustments to one of the tracks.  That could also just be, however, something inherent to the workflow in DP and what I've found works best for me.

I only played around a little bit last night so i have not checked all posibilities with SF.  When I tried to pan the single left mono source, it split it up into a very strange lookin' stereo channel.  Like I said, I only played for a short period of time.  Gonna spend some quality time with the project over the weekend.  For now I gonna focus on the 460/ck1 > MMP > R-09HR source.  Very happy with the results of this combo.

Ok, started playin with it in Sony Vegas Pro.  It allows mono tracks and i can pan and adjust levels of all three tracks at the same time.  Thanks for your input James & Joe!!!
