Taping in Times Square on NYE
« on: December 04, 2008, 12:31:34 PM »
Has anyone had any experience taping in the Times Square area for NYE?  I'm taping tDB at Nokia on NYE and it looks like they aren't allowing bags inside the Times Square area.  Any advice?

What security procedures are in place?

The New York Police Department will control all access points to Times Square. No bags or backpacks are permitted. Emergency Service squads, drug and bomb sniffing canine units and counter-terrorism personnel will be present in Times Square on New Year's Eve.

I wouldn't do it for two reasons: 1) it is not allowed.  You will rue the day you were caught and, 2) you can be ripped off so easily in a crowd.  What are you thinking?

I wouldn't do it simply because it will be tooooooo crowded and the police will probably go crazy for anything.

Stay home and record it on your VCR.

a. If they saw the bag they just wouldn't let me in the restricted area.

b. The theater is 4-5 blocks from the center of Times Square

c. One of my favorite bands playing the epicenter of NYE.

d. Anyone trying to take my shit would have to rip the bag from my cold dead fingers, and I'll have a crew.

If you do it, don't carry anything you aren't willing to lose.  Going through the crowd, you can feel hands going in your pockets.

i was concerned back in 2006 when i taped moe. @ RCMH. Even though it isn't directly in times square i was still roaming around with my gear bag in the times square area before the show. looking back, i was very worried about nothing. not one cop said a word to me. my point is if you get down to the times square area early enough no one should bat an eye.

btw i'm in for saturday the 27th  ;D
hopefully we can tape the egg too

Jesse,

I taped tND latenight @ BB Kings a few years ago - I had a large backback on a luggage cart cause I had 2 SLAs (Portico and AD1000).  The cop made sure I had a ticket before letting me through the barrier, and he looked in my bag, but he had no problem letting me roll through.   I figure there are so many cops and entry ways into Times Square that if one of them says no you can just walk a few blocks and try someone else.  I say go for it.

I've never been to the Nokia on new years eve, but arrive as early as you can. the line for the nokia starts forming around 4 PM, prolly sooner on this night. they may even move the line from it's normal spot to over by the lion king entrance. if you're driving in get on the west side of broadway if you can. plenty of parking lots between 44th and 46th, some as low as 20 bucks with a BB King validation. And as said before, with a ticket to the event, you should have no probelm with police. tell 'em you're part of the crew. ;) Good luck though, things change big time on NYE in NYC.
