DPA 4061'S > Church Audio Ugly pre > R-09HR 24/96 sample!
« on: December 06, 2008, 02:59:51 PM »
Ok, I had heard before that when in the perfect spot, DPA omni's are amazing ... but this proves it!
Below is a link to a short sample of a big band. I recorded them from about six feet back, center, mics either side of my neck facing forward.

The DPA's had windscreens but no grids, CA Ugly was set to about 75% on the two gain controls, R-09HR was recording 24 bit 96KHZ, line in, level of 50/80.

No eq or compression or anything else was done. Listen and be amazed ... I can sit in the sweet spot and point to where everyone is!
FLAC Sample is here:
http://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/sz4ncz
I'll be seeding the entire show soon on Dime and maybe somewhere else too, like TDD.

16bit 44.1K sample, some light compression added in Sound Forge, but no EQ:

Darn, I was hoping someone was going to say it also sounded pretty good to them. This stuff is so subjective.

The only improvement I can think of is that using 4060's instead of 4061's would have given a lower noise floor.

Thanks go to Chris Church for designing the CA Ugly. The bigger companies could learn a thing or two about size and performance vs price from it.

Sounds great.

How are you terminating the 4061's to the CA Ugly pre, microdots or 3.5mm plug?

I run my 4060's with the dpa pre, been thinking of trying another pre in the mix but hate to have to change out the microdots.

I'm not sure, but I think that Chris offers his components with Microdot connects-- might be worth looking in to.

nice sample, a bit thin but again you should try the DPA 4022 right next to the 4061 and you will hear a difference. I did not realize the difference until i ran two rigs at many shows.  dont get me wrong 4061 are very clear but just compared to the 4022 just add so much more depth.  I am not talking about highs and lows but depth or thickness and richness of a recording.

thanks for the samples

Mine are terminated wtih a single 1/8" plug. Chris can retrofit for microdots though.

To the guy who suggested 4022's, I would try those, but they're not as stealthy. I'm usually taping in situations where I have to be careful.

I agree with this.  I've never been satisfied with the 406x.  I wanted to be... after buying a pair of 4060's new... but I just don't like the sound.  For ambient, the realism is incredible, but I just can't listen to music recordings with them.  It seems (to me) that the mids are somehow "hollowed out" of the recording, or distorted, or just hard to hear.  Hard to describe, but it just does not sound "enjoyable" or "pleasant".

Please DO NOT mail me with tech questions.  I will try to answer in the forums when I get a chance.  Thanks.

I agree 100%. To me, good for stealth is one thing, portable is a whole different one.
Of course you can stealth with bigger mics. The question is not "can", but "should".
And this has nothing to do with your stealth skills or balls like some folks are always trying to say
( please, don't take me wrong, I'm not talking about Bluntforcetrauma's post).
Take care  ;)

The complete show is now posted on both Dime and The Trader's Den, in 24 bit/96K raw form (no compression, EQ, or limiting), and a slightly compressed and edited 16 bit/44.1KHZ version for CDR burning, iPods, etc.
My username on both sites is jmz93, same as here. Sorry I don't have the direct URL's handy, but I'm not seeding anything else at present, so they shouldn't be hard to find.
Comments welcome, especially from those of you with high-end DAC's, monitors, headphoens etc.

I do offer them in Microdot but I ask my customers order the microdots direct from DPA because they send everything out via UPS  or Fedex and they charge a $50 brokerage fee on imports into Canada. Much cheaper for you guys to get them in the USA and send them to me.

The DPA 406n's came up on another board and were explored by Onno Schultze.  Onno is a Tonmeister and expert in the field of microphones.  I believe it was for the most recent Schoeps offering that he was called in for tuning.  He has been around and has a studio in Holland and advises many studios.  The article is translated from the Dutch.

I found the article interesting, especially that Onno was so positive over the 4061's.  You can draw your own conclusions.

Cheers
