Edirol File Recovery Question
« on: January 18, 2009, 12:59:29 PM »
Hello.  I have a file recovery problem that I hope someone can help me with – thanks very much. (Edirol R1 with an Oade input mod set for a very basic recording at 192kbps mp3 using internal mics onto a Scandisk Ultra II 4G flashcard – the whole unit has been rock solid reliable its whole life.)

I was making an interview recording at the hospital last night, and a nurse came in and I went to pick up the recorder from the tray and it fell on the floor while recording.  On impact the door blew off the battery compartment and one of the batteries fell out.  (The file was not saved.)  I was hoping it would still be ok because the R1 is really good about saving the file when you run out of battery juice in the normal course of recording.

This time it shows as a file (in this case R1_0003, my third file) but it will not play or else it opens and closes as an empty file both on the R1 and on my computer.  When I look at the file properties of the drive, it shows three files (the first two files were made earlier and work fine): File #1 is 201,627 KB; file #2 is 1,276 KB and file #3 (the one I need) shows as 0 KB.  Yet the total drive properties show that 479MB (503,250,944 bytes) of the drive have been used and 1.43G is free space (2G card), so there are 276 MB of extra data unaccounted for there, which is about the size of my interview.
It’s like the data is on the card but not connected with the file name (?)

Any ideas for a program or method that might help recover the data if it’s there?  I remember a few years ago a few guys here developed their own WAV recovery programs, but I’m not sure if it makes a difference that I went straight to mp3 in this case.

Thanks again for any help, there is a huge sentimental value to this recording, and I do not want it to be lost, if at all possible.
Cheers!

I just had some good fortune with PhotoRec:

Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

YeeHa!!!!  It worked!  Thank you so much.  A 3 1/2 hour file.  Interestingly, that program also picked up some other stuff that had been on my card before the last time I formatted it.
Thanks again.  Cheers

I got caught during taping and filming and had to erase all recordings right in front of the sec   :-[  ;D

So now the main task is to restore the files (from Edirol R09HR). I tried my luck with photorec but no success (maybe I did something wrong, bad settings etc.?). Are there any other software recommendations - I already tried "pc inspector" but that was also not really a help. The first thing after this accidence was to set the Lock switch so I'm shure that nothing has been writed on the cards after I had to erased them.

Maybe the Edirol is formatting the card too properly but I can't imagine because the processing went pretty fast.

Two other programs some folks have had good luck with - GetDataBack and Stellar Phoenix. Both will cost you but I believe both also offer free downloads of a trial version that will show you what they can "see" and probably recover; at that point you have to buy if you actually want to recover the files but if the programs can't even see the files there is no need to buy it.

Sorry, I don't have links but googling should take you to their homepages. You can also search here at ts.com for "file recovery" or some similar term. There have been numerous posts and threads about this subject.

< have you tried the suggestion in this post? http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,116384.msg1556686.html#msg1556686 >

Thanks for the hints - I'll try them out.

Yeah I found this repair function but I'm afraid of making the chance to recorver something worser. But I can stage the same situation with another card so that's worth a try, too.

Any updates on this topic or new programs?

I was taping on an R09 onto a 4gb card which I've used many times. After about fifty minutes of recording I noticed that the recorder said hold is on, and the clock and levels were not moving behind the message. I took it off hold, but was unable to stop the recorder or to even power it off. Finally I pulled out the batteries and restarted the deck. I was able to finish the show, about fifty mins.

There are two files of the right size. The recorder is unable to play the first one. I tried photorec and it recovered several mp3 files (not sure what that is) and one riff file which shows up as a wav file, but foobar and win amp both can't play it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The R-09 has built-in recovery software.

I would try that before trying anything else.

I wasn't able to find anything in the R-09 manual.  Any chance someone has a link to it?

Also, I recovered a version of my file.  I imported the file in to Audacity as  Raw Data, 24bit, 44k, stereo, with a bit offset of 8 bytes.  The file opened up, although there are several pops throughout the file.  I'm thinking either the card wasn't sitting right or something.   Once I restarted the R09 to record the second half of the show, there were no pops or anything.  ofcourse I didnt touch the card at that time either so that may throw my theory of a poorly seated card out the window......

You can download the manual HERE.  Look on page 70 "Repair Files (Repair)".
