Looking for info on DAT> PC
« on: January 22, 2009, 07:25:27 PM »
Hey, I'm new to the forum.  My standalone CD burner does not work anymore.  I would like to find some info on going straight from DAT into my computer.  I have used EAC to rip, CDWave to track/edit and currently Roxio to burn.
Can I use either CDWave or EAC to transfer my DAT's?
Here is some info on what I just tried:
I looked at CDWave and saw that I could record.  I have a coaxial(digital) port in the back of my PC.  The 2 choices for Device in the record window are: Microsoft Sound Mapper and DigitalIn Realtek High Definition Audio.  I used the Realtek and it worked, but wasn't sure of the sound quality.  Is this an acceptable way/program to transfer?  Am I retaining the same quality as on the DAT?
Should I download Audacity and use that program instead?
Sorry so many questions, I just recorded 4 shows and need to transfer asap for friends and fans alike.  Any help or direction would be mucho appreciated!  Greg Anderson

Greg, welcome aboard.  I'll be sending you a PM too, but as long as it's straight digi in and not doing D/A> A/D > D/A conversions you should be getting a straight clone of what you had on dat.   Check you messages, Kirk

Welcome to TS!  The software you're using shouldn't matter for recording -- CD-Wave will work just fine.  The only reason you'd need to use other software, like Audacity, is if you wanted to do anything more than simply record the incoming digital signal from the DAT and insert track breaks (e.g. fades, compression, EQ, etc.)

as long as it's straight digi in and not doing D/A> A/D > D/A conversions you should be getting a straight clone of what you had on dat.

Well...maybe.  There are two questions you may wish to address:  <1>  Does the Realtek High Definition Audio DigitalIn resample the digital input?  <2>  And if it does resample, do you care?

Most DAT tapers prefer to use a soundcard that does not resample the digital input to ensure an exact clone of the DAT.  A resampling soundcard will result in a copy that is not a bit-for-bit clone of the DAT.  Would you hear an audible difference?  Probably not.  But most tapers want an exact clone, and so eschew resampling soundcards.

There are several commonly used soundcards that don't resample.  One is the M-Audio Audiophile 2496.  There are others, but I don't know all the makes / models off-hand.

That is a very good question.  I don't know if my soundcard resamples the digital input.  Do you know how I can find out?  I'd really like to keep it bit for bit.
