How about the Marantz PMD661? I have only just come across this one searching these forums. How does it compare for sound quality with the Sony PCM-D50 (with external mics)?

I think a lot of people (me included!) are looking at this and waiting for "somebody else" to get one and report on how it actually sounds.  Its predecessor,  the PMD-660 was a little disappointing to me until Doug Oade modified it and I am now very happy.

one more thought...

If you're considering the PMD-661 vs.  Sony PCM D 50, sound quality between these two machines is _probably_ fairly similar.  I admit that I'm only guessing here, but it's likely that microphones and their placement will make more of a difference in your final recording than the sound quality of the boxes.  Their features and external connections are different, you can pick the set that fits your interests best.  If you have a definite interest in using external microphones, the Marantz or the Fostex might work well for you.  XLR connectors and phantom power are a big plus over a miniplug and plug-in-power.

Be aware that the PMD661 will provide phantom power to pro mics
for a little more than 3 hours before the battery is exhausted.  The
claim of 5 hours of battery life is when recording MP3 using the
internal mics.

Of course, the PCM-D50 can't provide phantom power at all!  You'll
have to use an external battery box.

The Fostex FR-2LE has room for a 7.2V RC car battery inside.
That combination is good for many hours. (I want to say 7 but
I'm not certain right now.)  But the FR-2LE is as big as a child's
lunch box.
