upgrade recomendation
« on: March 24, 2009, 02:52:07 AM »
Hello all, as the subject says i'm looking for an upgrade of my actual setup.. mainly the mics

- iRiver h320 rockboxed
- GiantSquid Omnis

i did some recordings with not so bad results, but the last ones was on stadiums with a lot of people screaming and singing alone very loud and here is a sample of my recording of the R.E.M show: http://www.altrvl.com/rem_sample.wav , please give me your opinion about it. i want to get better recordings and also the current mic that i have isn't easy to hide.

Next month there will be two concerts here in Lima/Perú that i would like to tape... Kiss and Oasis.. both in the same stadium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estadio_Nacional_(Lima)#Non_Sport_Events), after read some stuff i think that i will go for some cardioid mics and i know that i will also need a pre-amp or a battery box .. but currently as i have to pay first for the tickets (about 90$ each) that leave about 250$ or less maybe for the upgrade  :(

i was looking for this as an option:

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-CMC-2

and considering this two options for the package:

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-SPSB-10
http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-SPSB-11

let me know what do you think and if you have any other recommendation.

Thanks in advance.

First question: are you running the GiantSquids on plain plug-in power from the Iriver - no bbox or external pre? Isn't the signal very low? How much Iriver gain do you typically add while recording?

For stadium shows you'll definitely benefit from cards instead of omnis.

Go for a Church Audio kit, beats the SP gear you mentioned hands down in value for money:
http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,80054.0.html

For $200 you get cards and a preamp. Budget the remaining $50 for postage and customs, and you're set to go!

I currently own sets of both the Sound Professionals SP-CMC-2 and the Church CA-11 and have gotten excellent recordings from both.  Personally, I'd put them on par with each other in terms of build and sound quality.  The SP-CMC-2 were my first set of good tapers mics but I bought the CA-11's as a backup and from all the great things I had read about Chris Church and his quality products.  In addition, although I use cardioid mics 99% of the time, with the CA-11's you have the option of available omni caps should you want them.  Bottom line, I agree with what's already been stated in this thread: taking into account that he offers excellent hand-made gear (and in some cases, custom-made) built to very strict specifications, Chris's products are just about impossible to beat for what he charges for them.  One caveat is that since Chris builds his gear to order, it does take some time for him to build the equipment and ship it.  Good luck!
