DPA 4060>DPA MMA6000>SONY PCM-D50 setup help
« on: April 15, 2009, 03:35:38 PM »
Hi-
I recently bought a new DPA rig for my D50 (as above). I was previously using and still have sonicstudios DSM-6s which sound great to me for many applications.
But several of my friends are using the DPAs and I really enjoy the sound of them too (for some venues).
I always stealth, and almost always record avant/free jazz stuff in clubs and auditoriums, very few rock or folk shows.
I have it pretty much figured out for settings with the sonics which I run with the plug in power.

I am running from the MMA6000 with a 3/8" mini adapter.
My questions are basically where do I set the various switches on the D50?
Do I run line in or mic in?
Where do I set the mic/line switch when recording?

Any suggestions for where to set the MMA6000? It has been suggested to me that 25db of gain is a good setting, controlling the recording levels with the D50.

 Thanks in advance, C

**EDIT - I meant DPA 4060**

The MMA6000 outputs a LINE level so use Line In.

I use the 4060's (more sensitive than 4061's), so I keep my levels around +6db. It varies on the band.

Where you set your will depend on the sensitivity of the 4061's and how loud the source is.

I would suggest going to a local band's show (that doesn't mind taping) and testing things out.

I appreciate the quick response. So I would reason that the mic/line switch gets set on line?

Yes.

For jazz type gigs from the audience perspective you'll probably need a bit more gain on the MMA6000. I usually dial in between 10-20db for that, but the noise of the Sony is reportedly low so you can get away with less and make it up on the recorder.  What ever works for you.  If you are putting these mics at the stage lip (where they generally work excellently for this type of music) you'll need less gain, 5db or even 0db for really loud stuff.

Thanks so much. I figured that was the correct way.
I will try it out tomorrow night.
