Sony PCM-D50 (USA version AC adaptor voltage)
« on: June 23, 2009, 08:04:21 AM »
Is the AC adaptor of the PCM-D50 selling in the USA multi-voltage capable (for worldwide use)?
Thinking of ordering from the USA (exchange rate versus Australian dollar is OK now).

I am almost positive that the AC adapter can take 100 to 240 V.  I looked at this recorder the last time I was in the States, and I remember checking this and thinking it would be OK (I live in Europe, so I generally look at this; we are on 230 V here).  Not sure what the standard is in Australia, but I assume it fits in that range?  Then a cheap plug adapter would be all that you need...

aaronji,
Yeah same voltage here. According to this page, though (under Accesories tab):
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-PCMD50/
It lists the AC power adapter (6V) model AC-ES608K.
I looked this up and it seems to be 110V input voltage.

But not sure whether to trust the webpage (they are often wrong) so I decided to ask here. At worst I'll have to buy a separate 240V AC Adaptor, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Both a page from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-AC-ES608K-100-240V-WORLDWIDE-COMPATIBLE/dp/B000V1MMWC) and a page from Ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/Sony-AC-ES608K-AC-Adaptor-for-NW-HD1-HD3-HD5-MZ-NH1-N10_W0QQitemZ120373606574QQihZ002QQcategoryZ86541QQcmdZViewItem) say 100 - 240.  Interestingly, though, the pictures appear to be of different adapters!  On the Ebay page, if you look at the enlarged photo, it does say "Sony AC-ES608K" and specifies 100 - 240...

But, like you said, the worst that happens is you need to spend $15 on a converter instead of $2 on a plug adapter...

aaronji, thanks for the investigative work :)
I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on this one soon.

Yeah, the amazon pic looks generic to me.
BTW, if you're facing the choice of getting a 110>220V transformer, consider picking up a universal multi adapter instead:

sunjan,
that multi-voltage AC adaptor looks good and is a nice second option to those voltage converters/transformers (one of which I already ordered, just in case). Anyway, the recorder should reach me next week, so one way or another, I'll have it running off the mains if need be :)

Thanks guys.

Got the unit!
...and just to add a little closure to this story:

The unit ships with a single-voltage AC adaptor (120V)! No globetrotting for this one...
So it seems that 240-120V step-down voltage converter i bought was necessary to run it here in Australia; tested and works fine!

Just thought I'd mention that in case anyone was curious.
BTW, the unit is fantastic.
