Topic: show recorded in 24-bit ... how do you make a 16-bit version?

a taper recorded a show in 24-bit and put it up on the archive as only 24-bit. That's great, but some users can't figure out how to play 24-bit files so I requested that the taper also make a 16-bit format. here's the source:

Zoom H4n > SD Card
Lineage: SD Card > Laptop > wav > Sony Soundforge 8.0 > 4 channel Mix > wav > Trader's Little Helper 2.4.1 > .flac

is there an easy way for him to make 16-bit flac from the TLH 2.4.1 ? ... it should be as easy as taking the original .wav files and running them through TLH with a different setting? any clues / hints on where to make that change?

UHHHHHHH, no....but you can dither and downsample with any audio editor, including free ones like Audacity.  Tons of threads about this elsewhere.

so would dithering and downsampling "lessen the quality of the recording" just for wider listener usability? how do most people listen / convert 24-bit flacs?

you want to go:
24 bit flacs > 24 bit wav > r8brain batch > 16 bit wav > 16 bit flac
and yes, of course you're somewhat lessening the quality

Assuming its 24/48

24 bit flacs> 24 bit wav> resample 48 to 44.1 > Dither to 16 bit> finished product is 16/44.1 CD quality

Many many posts on here about going 24>16 bit. Many many posts about software to do it. I use wavelab & Peak Pro 5.2 (mac). Audacity is free & will get the job done

I'm sure there are plenty of instructional posts, I just am poorly informed on the 24 to 16 procedure and figured just to post the question instead of searching (I know, bad forum visitor... but oh well). thanks for the answers.

the free version of r8brain is a fantastic tool and a great sample rate converter.  I second the r8brain recommendation.  You'll find the link to voxengo's website with a simple google search of "r8brain".

r8brain is very user friendly. I also recommend it.  I alternate between that and Audacity.

IMHO r8brain is one of the greatest tool ever!!

I used it to reclock, and it does it perfectly.

With Wavelab you can use the batch process to resample and dither all in one step. Just choose the output format and the destination directory.
