Set-up Questions for a new taper
« on: October 03, 2009, 01:59:10 PM »
Hi

My recorder setup is this:

SONY Hi-MD MZ-M200

ECM-DS70P stereo microphone

I usually place that mic at chest level, under my shirt, because its too big to have out in the open...

I've recorded 4 shows with this setup, 1 of which turned out really good (i think anyway).

Then I tried this mic:
SP-TFB-2
Its an over the ear mic. I attempted to record Tesla, Sound quality is REALLY bad, its very bassy....

Could someone recommend some mics, do you think I need a battery box? I would like to keep this between $250-$300

I plan to record in stealth situations. The type of music is loud, Marilyn Manson, Sisters of Mercy, KMFDM, HIM, etc.

I tried to contact Chris Church twice, I'm not sure if my PM are getting to him. I understand that he's a busy guy  8)

Well if you will ever manage to tape KMFDM, be sure to upload it on DIME or somewhere, since their tapes are really rare.. :)

As it says on the page for the SP-TFB-2 mics, they typically require more power than plugging them into your deck can provide. You'll need a battery box in order to get full performance from them. The Sony mic can run without an additional battery box as it is designed to run without it.

You will generally get better sound the higher you can get your recordings on your body (provided using a stand is not an option), and you will generally get better sound by using a mic with better frequency response (the Sony is 100Hz-15,000Hz, whereas the SP mics are 20Hz-20,000Hz), so I'd recommend picking up a battery box to go with the SP mics if you can afford it.

I'd just buy the Sound Professionals SPSB-10 ($59) - it can be shipped to you basically immediately, and it's plastic (light) but a touch sturdier than the CA-UBB.

As for a mic upgrade, look in the Yard Sale. Somebody was selling some Church CA-14s in there for like $120 I think.

Don't worry too much about a recording with an omni mic like you have being bassy - you can fix that in post.  But do always try to get as close to the sound source as possible. The further back you are with an omni, the performance worsens noticeably.

Hopefully in time for Type O Negative on the 29th  ;D

As you tape at chest level as I do, try to have space in front of you, this gets a better sound as there's less to block it

A- that sony mic will distort in loud rock/metal shows, trust me , been there done that with that exact mic

B- chest level like mentioned before, unless you have no one in front of you will produce less than desired results, so unless you are in the front row of a balcony then get your mic up high(use your imagination-once i thought about it it was easy and the resluts are much more consistant and better by far)

C- your recorder is fine but till you get some other mics like the church ones the loud rock/metal shows will not be good but softer shows would be fine with your current setup

Which reminds me.. what if I would be standing in the front row? What would the results be like?

Front rows are generally not good, think of putting yourself in a equallateral triangle with the speakers which in general put you near the sbd, but not always

An HQ omni mic set will sometimes work out from the front row, depending on the stage monitors and how the main PA is set up.  You'll generally pick up more of the stage, so for some bands that might be fine if they run a lot of monitors that face out.

But generally, yes, that close is not wise.
