Looking for something like this for this weekend...if I run the caps without windscreens, will bumping the fabric transmit right to the capsules?

Can you clarify why you are not going to use windscreens but instead lay some sort of fabric over the mics?  Is this a stealth job?  I would think if a fabric is rubbing over the surface of the mics that could potentially cause some loud noise being picked up by the mics.  You could probably test this out at home if you can simulate the situation.

Indoor taping you could probably cut smaller squares of fabric that then get wrapped around the caps instead of going for a general draping if you need to change the color (say from grey to black) or obscure the shape. My generalized question is, how much will the fabric look out of place? In a giant crowd of 10k+, draping fabric can work, but the smaller the crowd, the less effective it is as a concealment device because security will more likely be closer (physically) and be able to see the differences and what it is.

my personal favorite is shadecloth though it is fairly stiff so it doesn't "drape" as readily as some other options

Decent sized crowd, a couple thousand. The idea is that the stand will be between a couple people in a relatively dark environment that is occasionally lit up pretty brightly, running at head height. I feel like the profile of a stand will stand out more than something like the picture above.

any solid fabric will stand out as solid fabric when lit up with venue / stage lighting, reflecting it, or lighting up from it.

Black lace - (or appropriate color for whatever circumstance - ie: when in a sea of tie dyes,...).
it allows the light to pass thru it (non-reflecting) while still obscuring.

Personally I think you ought to look around the house and decide what to sacrifice.

A piece from an old black t-shirt is pretty acoustically transparent, non-reflective, and readily available.

The really nice lace black teddie your woman's got would work probably be slightly better technically, but do you want to destroy that?  (He thought making his mics sexy was more important than making me sexy...)
