AT853 Powering Questions
« on: October 09, 2009, 11:36:42 AM »
I have 2 AT853's with the AT8531 battery packs with mini xlr, its my understanding(maybe i am wrong) that these may not fully power them for high spl situations. I have done the 4.7k mod before into a single mini plug but wanted to know if this could be done without going to a single mini plug, you know just put the 4.7k in each mini xlr. would i have to build a 4.7k y-cable to make the changeover, the idea was to keep the mini xlr but i guess if i have to just chop them if it makes no difference. Any input/insight would be great. Also would anything power them fully besides the phanton adapters AT ha like a duel 3 wire BB or Church pre or would those be about the same as the AT8531 battery packs.

I don't have the definitive answer.  But, I think if you have 3 wires already you don't want the 4.7k mod... the mod is a workaround for when you go from 3 wires down to 2 wires.

I would ask Chris Church as he's the developer of the 4.7k mod.

Hmm, doing some ready from some old threads it is suggested that the AT8531 battery supplies don't let the AT853's reach there max high SPL and may distort in loud situations, anyone got any first hand experience? I was curious if the mod could still be done with three wire hookup so i could still run them in high spl with those battery packs and mini xlr.

FWIW, I think a Church pre with the 3-wire connectors is probably what you want - smaller than those AT units (plus one box, instead of two) and to my knowledge it can fully power them, and have 4.7k mod built in to the extent necessary. Chris can raise the voltage on the box a little too if necessary.
