Which most complete rig for 265$ ?

Hi,

a friend of mine has a budget of 265$ to put in a most complete possible rig.

I suggested her to buy a pair of Church Audio CA-11, a Church Audio battery box and a second-hand IRiver H120.

Is it any good ?

that will do a fine job, the iriver can be had for 80-120 and you could easily pick up a good set of mics and bb or pre for 150ish

I think the Church CA-14 is currently $120, battbox is another $40, and $100 for the iRiver... The CA-14, IMHO, are much better sounding mics from the samples I've heard than the -11s.  But you should listen to some samples on Archive.org and decide for yourself. 

Also keep in mind that Church gear is custom made and, therefore, you should keep in mind when you "need" the gear to be there, and plan to order the gear at least 8 weeks before that to give Chris plenty of time to build it.

I fully agree, but the CA-14 are not listed on the e-bay page.
Another problem is that as far as I can remember, you can't remove the windscreens from the caps...

Does anyone know the price of a pair of CA-14 ?

I would recommend you check the Retail Space section of TS.com.  Chris has been advertising them there as recently as this weekend I think.  I also think there are photos of them w/o the screens on them now...  The price he had listed as I recall is $119.

Don't buy any of Chris Church's fine gear on E-Bay. He gives lower prices to taperssection members, so contact him directly by PM or email.

You are not supposed to remove the windscreens from the CA-14's. It is designed to have the proper frequency response with the screens on. This is not a problem unless the larger size is a problem for you.

A system composed of CA-14's (or even CA-11's), a ST-9100 pre and an H120 is capable of making great recordings.

Also depends on the application. I shoot shows multicamera. Audio i usually use a pair of MXL990s going to a DMP3 preamp recorded with a dr-1 (tascam). I also record 2 channel audio off the board and mix with the ambient. Have a listen:

Sure, the mics are dirt cheap, but depending on the application, they can sound decent, especially after some post cleanup. Here's a song from the same show with only board audio (a cover of Judas Priest Grinder by a well known 80's metal band Wild Dogs):

She might have issues with insufficient gain on the iriver, since you don't include an outboard pre in the chain.

I'd suggest CA-11>ST-9000>H320 (or CA-14>ST-9100>H320 if you can afford it).

Note that the H3xx series are usually cheaper on ebay, and since you won't go digi-in there's no added benefit of going H120.

When ordering from Chris, remember to have the parcel marked as gift, or you'll bust your budget paying EU customs!
