Stupid AKG bar (KM235) question...
« on: November 06, 2009, 09:23:48 PM »
Am I just being stupid here? Bought one of these a few years ago but never got around to using it, started messing with it tonight. But no matter how much I turn the studs, my shocks all lock into place at the same amount of turning, about 10-20 degrees off of where I'd like them to be. And I can't get them as tight as I want to by screwing the studs up through the bar and into the mount, so I end up turning the mount instead. I have to think there's an easy trick but 10 minutes of fiddling doesn't yield what I'm aiming for.

I'd like to know the answer too.  I actually use other studs from a different mount.

Interesting. It's definitely poor engineering in that the don't screw all the way down to the base...the threads are so short and then they just pop through. Even something like this would work better: http://www.rickscamaros.com/product.asp?pf_id=WP-29&dept_id=3143 but with a 5/8" thread instead of a 1/2"...

Try getting a rubber washer in between shockmount/bar or bar/screw.  They'll lock tight but still give a little so you can position the mics exactly where you want.

Or am I thinking something else?

 ???
I just push the studs up and screw them into the mount
finalizing the position before the final turn of tightening.

yeah, just figure out what position you want the mounts at and screw in from there.

i do have a pair of mounts that don't seem to have enough thread to total lock into place so i use a rubber band to seal it up tight.

BAM
i had this same problem with my busman shocks
the problem is that the shock doesn't go deep enough for the bars threads to go inside and tighten down
put a rubber washer used in a hose over the threads on the bar and you will be good to go
got the idea from another member here in the team bm thread and never looked back

I use a 5/8" locking ring when needed that you should be able to get a little cheaper than this item at your local "sound & vision" store.

I'm a fan of the rubber washers and keep a handful in my gear bag.

I'm sure Grace product is just fine.  Here's another option I like because the outer diameter is over oversized:

The Grace product is fine, made of plastic, I have a few.  But I like the idea of the rubber washers and the oversized outer diameter locking ring too!!  Thanks guys!

???
I just push the studs up and screw them into the mount
finalizing the position before the final turn of tightening.

Yep.

Yep.

This sure doesn't work with my bar and mounts.  It simply never tightens and because the studs aren't threaded all the way to the knob, it simply goes up until there are no more threads and the stud are then free and loose.  I guess I'll try the rubber washer.

Oh, I see.  That sucks.  Def try washer or if you can get a metal ring, that should do the trick as well...
