Microtrack shut down before file saved
« on: December 14, 2009, 12:06:28 PM »
I taped a show last week; mics to UA-5 and Microtrack I, 24-bit, 48 kHz.  The UA-5 and MT powered through a VR box.  The show ended and I hit the record button to save but right after I hit record, the mini USB cord came out of the MT and the MT turned off.  When I tried to power on the MT, it came on but the screen said "reading media," and stayed like that for quite some time, so I just turned off the MT.  I was able to transfer the file directly from the MT to my computer; however, there are no attributes assigned to the file.

When looking at the file properties, under general it comes up as a wave sound, 1.34 GB, but there is nothing under summary.

The file will not come up on Sound Forge, which says the file type is unknown.

Am I looking for a file recovery program or something else to try and fix this?  I am, obviously, not knowledgeable about these things.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

it sounds like all the data is there, but the file header info was never written.
try this WAV header repair utility:

altenatively, some audio editors will allow you to open "raw pcm" files.  I'm not sure about Sound Forge, though.

I borrowed a MT II recently to check out, and recorded using the line inputs from my usual mics and preamp. I suffered internal battery death since it was evidently not fully charged, so I switched to a USB battery when I noticed. After that, I got nothing except a file that was 0 KB. Do you think I just hit the record button twice at once and it stopped after it wrote the header? Or the other thing is that I may have turned off the power before stopping recording or closing the file. Does that make it disappear completely?
