Yamaha Pocketrak C24/W24 - announced at NAMM
« on: January 14, 2010, 05:16:41 PM »
Another pair of handhelds just out.
Finally Yamaha is going 24/96...

Haven't had time to compare the specs yet, but historically the Pocketraks have been rebranded Sanyo models that were launched on the Japanese market earlier.

The C24 contains a high quality nondirectional stereo microphone making it perfect for recording a wide area without having to move positions to pick out the different instruments.

Features:

The Yamaha POCKETRAK W24 also offers 24bit/96kHz sound quality and 2Gb of internal memory, allowing up to 13 hours of mp3 quality recording ‘straight from the box’. If the internal 2Gb storage is not enough, it’s expandable using standard microSD cards.

The C24 is an updated version of the Yamaha Pocketrak 2G, and the W24 updates the Pocketrak CX.  The CX actually sounds pretty good, so I'm interested to hear the W24.

Sunjan is right, Yamaha gets its recorders from Sanyo's Diplytalk line.

The button layout of the W24 is identical to the CX, it seems to me it's a mere "speedbump" upping the bit- and sample rate.
I don't think there are any 24-bit Sanyos, which means these two models are exclusive to Yamaha this time.

Anyway, prices are out.
B&H is selling the W24 at $300 and the C24 at $200.

As expected, lagacy models have dropped. 2G goes for $135 at some vendors, while CX sells for $175.

The reference manuals have been uploaded.

Just for fun, I looked up the PIP:

Guaranteed operation at 1.3V

Doesn't look very impressive to me. Is that really correct, or just some minimum disclaimer figure?
